8 days seems on the money. I always found a slightly higher than normal tank temp would help speed up the process as well.
I love the vid with the pair attacking the net. If that doesn't prove cichlids have a memory, I don't know what does. I had a pair of breeding synspilums years ago and they did the exact same thing. I ended up losing the female due to aggression from the male though. Long story short, with no fry to remove from the tank the male was left in peace. It was about 3 months later when I held up a net and the male went berserk that I realized just what sort of a memory they can posses.
83-84F on the tank temp and I have the Eheim 2180 throttled back to approx 33%. In fact the new fry can safely swim near either intake and do not have to worry about getting sucked in...
Since I have only the new Spawn and the Parents in the 225g, the 3 Hydro sponge V's can easily handle the Bio-load so the 2180 is just back-up really...
For having a brain smaller than a pea, they exhibit, extraordinary memory.
Even though I interact with them everyday, when my Mother comes close to the tank, they both will chill out and check out the features of her face.
It looks like they are checking out her eyes and her facial features and show no aggression toward her. Once they determine it is her they just go about their business, not any bother to them or her...anybody else, including myself, they go straight up Aggro, and snap and flare like you see in the videos...I can't figure out why...Probably a Matriarch thing.!
I been trying to get it on a video, showing how they will check out different parts of her face through the side panel...
Dad has jumped out of the tank and slid along the top to get that blue net before...I dipped out some dead meal worm, set the net on top of the tank, between the openings and bent down to get the top...Splash, plop snap, and the net handle is banging up and down. He actually had the net material in his mouth and started flopping to get back in the water...They both have snatched the net out of my grip and taken it into the tank, when I didn't expect it...

They have made me jump plenty of times, out of my sleep, splashing water on me, trying to get at a moth outside the tank.
And my fav, spitting rocks at the end of the tank next to my head while I'm asleep....

good thing I got a plastic tank...
