Finally my turn, roughly 1,000 gal plywood build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Good to know! Did you do some clear coats first or just the 4 or 5 tinted coats? Are you happy with how many you applied or would you go thicker?

Also bad news. The display I was going to buy sold this morning, so no upstairs tank for now. Bit of a bummer!

I did a couple of coats clear, then started the tinted. I did 7 total coats before I ran out of epoxy all thin coats. Its been over 4 years now with no leaks so it must of been good, I wouldn't change it at all.

Been a while since the last update, thought I would throw something up this morning. No pics, but basement is coming along. Framing is complete! I ran an Ethernet cord from the first floor down to the basement for the reefkeeper since it is tucked into the floor joists, has to be done now. Also got cable lines rerun and out of the way.

Now I am onto electrical, which is a bit above my pay grade. We will be tackling that in the next couple of weeks, lights and outlets for the finished side, maybe a bit for the unfinished side.

So any tips or thoughts on the electric? Things you guys wish you had done or had when in my situation? Now is the time to speak up lol

I wish I had done as you are doing, when I finished my basement the one oversight I had was that I did not run dedicated lines for the tank :( Just put in more than you think you need for the tank and make sure to use GFCI. When I finally ran the lines I actually attached them to the bottom of the tank, they are out of the way, no chance for water to splash on them, all the cords droop down naturally making a drip line. Honestly don't know if it was a smart thing to do or not but it has worked thus far :)

I am pretty excited to have a couple circuits just for the main tank and extra tanks. I'm also going to be hiding all the electrical on the unfinished side, in the sump area. There'll end up being an outlet or two behind/under the tank for in the future, but I'll have those covered as long as the tank is there.

That seems like a good system you have! As long as water isn't getting into the outlets I'd think you should be ok.

That will sort of be the situation. The main tank will be on the finished half of the basement, the room is roughly 16' wide and 26' long. The two sumps, five or six 75 gal tanks and a 125 are going to be on the unfinished side. Around the main tank I will have a canopy, I'm thinking I'm going to add in a fan to pull humidity to the unfinished side, then I'm thinking some sort of air exchanger. Close to 2000 gals without reducing the humidity would cause me some big issues. I haven't gotten nearly that far on the plans yet, but it is something I am planning for. If you are aware of a unit I can replace a window with that would be all the better.

Well I just picked up all the stuff from the closing store tonight. I had to rent a 15' truck to move all of it but it all fit in one trip. Eight 75 gal tanks, a 125, a few 20 gal, two 150 gal bins, a couple large pumps, a couple large cartridge filters, a couple huge heaters and controllers and some other misc stuff. I have a boat load of cleaning to do on it all but for the price it was hard to argue with. So here are some pics

So last night I got my stack of wood moved so I could start planning the layout. Ran into a bit of bad news, I don't have nearly as much space on the unfinished side of the wall as I thought. Tanks and sumps are going to be snug and require some creative planning.

That said I got the area cleaned out and started taping where the sumps and tanks would go. If I build stands that will support two tanks tall I can fit six of the 75s, the 125 and the two 150 gal sumps. Overall I'm pretty pleased with that!
