Who Said Impossible? Planted Oscar "Community" Tank Video

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I find this post very odd, I can somewhat handle that your oscar doesnt tear up plants,
But too have like thirty tetras in their at all times without losing anything seems weird.
A oscar who hasnt been fed feeders before still have always ended up eating small things
with me, I dont consider oscars aggressive but instead this is a food source for them,
Do you keep him stuffed with pellets permanetely? How old is this oscar is it extremely old?

oscar is only about 3 years old. he gets fed NLS pellets like the rest of my fish once a day, at night before the night lights come on. like i said, i started with giant danios and he was unable to catch them. after about 6 months in the tank together, it appears he has given up on trying to catch smaller fish altogether.

Not possible to train an Oscar not to eat a fish smaller than itself. They'll be eaten eventually. IMO. Your Oscar must be slow or lazy if he can't catch GD. My O dropped them guys like breakfast burritos and I had to move my entire school to another tank. :/

Oh, and that's a very nice looking tank setup, O, and Bolivians.

its been a long process of "training" the oscar not to rip up plants or eat his tankmates, but i have to finally claim success.

the plants i can't explain, i've had the oscar for almost 3 years and got him when he was 2". never tolerated plants previously but when i decided to give it another try this past february he never ripped them up like in the past. i started by introducing 15 giant danios as dithers at the end of february as well. they are too fast to be caught and i thought it would be a good test. after a couple of weeks of that working out i added the 5 bolivian rams, oscar never even looked at them funny. next i added the lemon tetras, he ate one of those on the first night they were in the tank but none after that. a couple weeks later i added the black neons, again he got one the first day.

nope, everything is the same as far as ph and hardness. the only thing i could think is that we did move in early february and it ended up being a lot more stressful on the oscar then i had anticipated. he was not in great shape when we got to the new house (3hr drive), so i don't know if the whole move had anything to do with it, i don't see why it would, but i added the plants like 2 weeks later and he never touched them.

the only other thing i can think is that he's been fed NLS pellets exclusively for about 18 months now. maybe oscars rip up plants and eat everything else in their tank because they are lacking in nutrition that other staple foods are lacking? i have noticed he is far less agressive and more calm since being on NLS, but he's also gotten older and bigger in that time as well so who knows...

Sorry, I don't mean to be rude but which one is it? Did you have a long process of training? Or can you not explain? Or is the NLS? I call BullSh*

Why would you say you 'trained' your Oscar when you know that it's impossible?

Just be strait up with us bro, you don't have to try and look 'cool' by making up stories.

the reason the word "trained" is in quotation marks is because i know i didn't actually train a fish to do anything. and no, i can't completely explain why all of a sudden he isn't ripping up plants or eating smaller fish he should be eating. i presented a couple of my theories i think might be plausible as to the explanations. if you hold on a minute i'll go ask the oscar what the real reason is and get right back to you.

exactly what story am i making up? the fake video i posted showing a 13" oscar living peacefully in an aquarium with 50 smaller fish he should be eating? get a life, i hardly find the need to look cool on a fish forum, just thought some people might find my setup interesting since people like you have been unable to pull off similar combinations and claim that anyone who has must be lying about it.

It is an interesting setup but don't get mad at me, you're the one who said you "claim success in training your Oscar" not to eat plants and small fish, and that it was a "long process" to train him. Sorry if you're offended by my doubt.

i'm not offended, i don't understand what you are doubting. are you looking for a solid concrete definitive explanation? sorry, i can't give one. all i've stated is the process i've been through over the last 6-7 months and even including some of the last 3 years of owning this particular oscar. what you see in the video is the end result. i'm not claiming to be a "fish whisperer" or anything like that, all i've stated is that i have successfully had an oscar living with edible tank mates and plants since february with very few losses.

i wish you success in your oscar planted tank. :) you can actually train or condition fish. although i'm not sure if you actually did and just got really lucky. fish can be trained to go through a maze, even play soccer, and play basketball. they can also precieve time, understand scheldules, understand different color cues and recognize their owner. so why can't the impossible be possible?

Well I still apologize just in case. To explain, my doubt was with your opening post where you stated that after a long process of training your cichlid, you taught him not to eat tiny fish or dig up the sand, thereby messing up your plants. I didn't realize you were joking. Sometimes we get some pretty silly stuff posted on MFK and I'll admit I'm probably the first to call BS. For example, the other day someone claimed they taught their Oscar to communicate with hand gestures.
