Punching Holes In Fins To Reduce Aggression?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I mean, I really didn't start this thread to talk about conkel, but I suppose it was inevitable since the video is of conkel. Buddha and I have even butted heads on the issue when it came up in another thread and there was some misunderstanding and poor word choice.
Bottom line for me is I see his fish and they are nice. I know there's some controversy but I really don't care right now, who else is going to ship me 9"+ fish from a bunch of different species aside from conkel distributors? Rapps is great too, his shipping is a little pricey and he usually offers smaller fish. I have no problem growing out fish but sometimes I want something already grown to pair with another big fish or just because I don't want to spend a couple years on a project. I'll order from anyone with nice fish who is reliable and will ship them to me if they have what I'm looking for. And if I get fry off it I'll advertise exactly where the fish came from and the buyer can decide for themselves.
I'm in the hobby to learn, have fun, meet people that are also involved, and to help others out, period.

i have to agree, the bottom line is the quality of the fish, the buyer has to decide for them selves whether a certain breeding practice affects the outcome of the fish being sold.

If the purpose is to breed fish in unsuitable conditions then its an unethical idea, if its only to help the long term existence of the breeding pair then its more acceptable. Don't think it reduces aggression, but like others have said slows the male down.

Live in the UK and have had fish from Don before, very happy with my transactions.

punch a couple holes in conkels feet and see if he walks as fast. i mean i dont think he would notice because surely the dovii cant tell.

"Large facilities" when you have a 1/3 of an acre pond full of dovii is a bit of an understatement, don't ya think? :D

God, I would pay to see the kind of behavior going on underwater in THAT pond... Has to be pretty intense.

I've got a few cichlids that came from Don. All nice fish. As for the practice mentioned in the video that is very old and I very much doubt used.

My concern with not just Don's fish, but all of the florida farms are how they lable there fish. I see F1 fish listed all of the time. How exactly do you know if a fish is F1 that came out of a 1/3 acre pond? Once they go in the pond and start spawning there is no way to know what is wild, F1, F2, etc at that point. It seems all adult fish from Florida get called wild. That's not a knock on Don either. It seems to happen with all of the farms.

As I said at the begining, the fish I have from him are good quality and I've been happy with them.

I've heard about this practice elsewhere and I was as indifferent then as I am now. Who cares? It hinders the fishes ability to make sharp turns.
People electrocute their dogs to prevent them from barking, muzzle them to prevent them from biting, neuter and spay them to prevent them from breeding and dock their tails and ears for who knows what reason. Branded cows, declawed cats, shoed horses,.... and the list goes on. I've even seem people put leashes on their own offspring. Go figure.

ya but i dont agree with any publicity is good publicity. after you hear your local resturant got shut down for filth for the umteenth time i dont think your going to wanna step foot in there.

Practices like this are for people who only care about the money of trying to breed and sell fish. Not for the welfare of the animals.

I agree with those who said if someone unknown came on here and gave that advice, all hell would break loose. I've never cared for Conkel for some reason and have never bought fish from him. I can't give a reason why except for all the bad-mouthing about him over the years every time his name is brought up. Maybe I'm not educated enough on the good he's done for the hobby. I know one thing though, there's never controversy when you hear other big names in this hobby, just Conkel.

Obviously the majority here.
