PETA sue Seaworld for enslave the whales...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't really see that as a bad thing. These are giant majestic creatures. Why should they be kept in swimming pools? These whales migrate all over the world and travel thousand of miles. They're highly evolved social animals. Why is it that we feel the need to keep them in captivity? I'd much rather see a documentary on TV of them being filmed in the wild then see a poor whale doing tricks for me at Sea World.

As for killing them, that's a whole other issue. The Japanese are single-handily destroying the world's oceans for their own selfish desires; seafood.
Actually some populations of orcas do not migrating. In fact there are more than 40 cultures of orcas in the world, some of them were migratory while others rarely leave their home area.

Obviously releasing the Orcas has not turned out very well, which is why I do in fact support banning the capture of new Orcas (they are not whales despite what their name may say), and chemically sterilizing the ones that are currently in captivity.

As for the comparison to fish, when alligator gars start forming long term close family groups, develop language, and develop the intelligence of a small child, come back to me. Until then, there is no comparison. And even keeping that analogy, I do support a ban, or a licensing requirement, for a good deal of fish. For instance, I don't think Petsmart should be allowed to sell Pacu to 8 year olds with a 10 gallon tank. Arapaima, have no business in this hobby at all.

Alive is alive despite the amount of measurable intelligence, and suffering is suffering.

i'm pretty sure your stance on it was it's okay as long as they were made into soup afterwards. haha, alright, enough derailment. debate of whales in captivity vs gars and aripimas in fishkeeping hobby may resume

touch gloves *DING DING DING*

i think there was a lot of info that wasn't clear. if they were eaten, yes i'd be ok with it. but since they werent' eaten, me and jose was arguing that it's no worse than sportfishing.

Ok yes. I feel the same way about these whales as I do with exotic animals and even zoos. But to compare this to EVERY animal that is kept in captivity is just plain stupid. A house cat or a dog is NOT the same issue. Not even close.
It's no different from keep a house cat in the house for whole life, being overweight due to the lack of exercises. Same with few dogs. Even we kept rodents in 10gal tanks or birds in cages that don't offer much space for fly around.

Alive is alive despite the amount of measurable intelligence, and suffering is suffering.

No way. You cannot tell me an oscar is the same as an orca. That's like comparing the mental capacity of an infant to an adult.

So it's okay to keep an oscar in 55gals because the fish is dumb?

I don't think that the lawsuit will go anywhere but it will bring attention to the issue. It's interesting to note that the 13th amendment does not mention 'human' enslavement but history gives us the context for which it was written.

I think it's wrong to keep these creatures captive. I would sight the same reasoning that most of the people on this forum think it is wrong to keep huge arowanas or pacu in a small tank.... On top of that, people need to understand that these creatures are not fish. I don't have much faith in the intelligence of our own species. I would be willing to bet that if you quizzed the man on the street, half of them would probably think whales are fish.

Our conciousness, knowledge and compassion are increasing and evolving as a society. We once thought it was OK to keep a single chimpanzee in a jail cell. Now, some of us know that this is wrong and zoos keep them in social groups that mimic a more natural environment. This lawsuit might be taken more seriously some time in the future.

Excatly. There is NO difference between whales kept in capitivity and fish keeping. At last the whales have good life, they can still do their agility that is reflected to the wild behavior.

Then why do captive whales display distinct psychological problems that are not present in wild animals. Ever seen a wild orca with a limp dorsal fin? No, but every captive one has it.

The two aren't even comparable. A wild Oscar in theory has the entire amazon at it's disposal, but in reality stays in the same 100 yard territory it's entire life. Orcas migrate across the globe. A more apt comparison would be keeping something like a Blue Shark, which I would also be against in most instances. But even that does not factor in the intelligence differences between the species. An intelligent animal knows that is captive, a fish doesn't. As long as the fish has room to swim and eat, it is fine. Orcas need way more than that.

Why do you think circus elephants rampage all the time, but circus goats do not? It is the intelligence.

So your belief of lack of intelligence etc. devalues the oscar and we can now justifiably abuse them? I agree with the use of Whales to profit is crap. But you cant just cut it off with your qualifications of a worthy animal to protect.
