"Wet Pet" for 180g

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A lot of the options I am seeing I was under the impression they would out grow the tank... I would love to do an Umbee solo but I thought it would end up too large and need moved. Pbass and arows grow too big for sure I thought. I appreciate all the suggestions, but I was thinking the max size for a single fish in this tank would probably be around 22" so that it could still turn around comfortably (correct me if I am wrong, not an expert)

I would like some opinions on an Umbee, do you guys think it will fit for life or did the suggestion just get my hopes up. I dont want to make any fish uncomfortable.

Thanks again

You are correct, I would not put some of the fish mentioned in your tank for life. For your size tank and wet pet, I would really consider a fahaka puffer. Great fish with great personality. Once it is fully grown, it will make a spectacular display fish in my opinion and your tank will not look "empty".

There's a lot of speculation on what's acceptable for Dovii/Umbee.

In my opinion, a standard 180 (6X2X2) is the minimum you should keep a SINGLE MALE of either species for LIFE. Of course bigger is better, and if you can afford it, go bigger, but I think that a 180 is comfortable and not cruel for life.

Rarely do either of these grow very much over 20" in an aquarium. There are some that get up to 24", but they are few and very far between. In the wild, they can get much bigger, but it just doesn't happen in a tank. Even Mel's monster in his 600 gallon hasn't gotten 30". You'd be fine with a 180 for the life of a single male.

I was going to set a 180 up for a single Dovii and was told by quite a few members on this site that it would not be big enough. As much as i would love one i don't think i would want to dedicate a tank bigger than that to one fish, so i didn't do it. I now have quite a few different growouts to go in there. I would rehome them all straight away if i thought the 180 was big enough for a Dovii though.

Good luck with whatever you choose !

Rapps seems to think a 180 is fine for a dovii for life. I'd take his advice over the majority of people on here.

Seems like people go a bit overkill when suggesting minimum tank size on here. It'd be great if we could all keep guppies in our 500 gallon tanks. But there is a "comfortable minimum" for every fish. And for a dovii, I agree with Rapps that a standard 180 is that comfortable minimum for a single male dovii.

Especially a lot of people seem to go a bit overkill on this site after seeing Mel's Dovii. But that thing is an anomaly. There's just not that many that get over 20".

And personally, I have a bigger tank for mine. Because I can afford it. But I wouldn't think twice about keeping one in a 180 if that was the biggest tank I could do for my fish.

But to each their own.

I'm not saying you are wrong, because i really don't know. I must admit that i thought the 180 would be big enough when i purchased it, infact it was brought soley for a Dovii ! I was very dissapointed when i was told that it would not be big enough.

My tank would have been a display tank in the living room, so the fish would have had interaction everyday for "most" of the day, as my wife is at home with small children. I really didn't want the Dovii going mad, smashing itself trying to kill everyone all day.

As i said i would rehome my current stock and get a Dovii in a second if i thought it would work. I have enough room for a bigger tank, but i really couldn't justify having much bigger than a 180 for one fish to the wife

Rapps also thought a silver arowana could be housed comfortably in a 150gal. Don't get me wrong, Rapps is a great vendor and knows his fish, but why must we always look at bare minimums. Rapps is a vendor and will look at bare minimums. The op has a tank with a 24" width. The dovii has the potentail to get to 24"s or more, why would you put a fish in a tank that has problems turning? If the tank was 3ft wide, then yes, go for it. The op mentioned he does not want to worry about having to upgrade. This is in no way shape or form overkill.
