I dont think you have too many, you have too many pets when you can no longer afford to feed them. I have quite a zoo myself:
14 Bearded dragons
15 Red tail boas
2 Blue tounged skinks
2 dogs
1 Rabbit
2 Whites tree frog
1 55 G freshwater
1 37 G saltwater
Oh, Im I havent even metioned all the other animals I'm holding at my house for friends.
14 Ball pythons
25 turtles
1 cat

Wow lol so many pets. I agree that "too many" should only be applied when you cannot properly care for them all. I prefer the company of my tanks and cats more then often over people lol.

I cut down a lot. Mostly due to not having the funds or time/energy to take on a lot of pets. I got 3 smaller fish tanks now, all native, don't require heat, keep it natural with plants, fewer waterchanges etc. But instead of pets I replaced it with plants. I am sort of a plant nut right now so that takes a lot of my time, money, energy. I also got a small pond that is a big responsibility too. Atleast I know what I can properly care for, some people don't.

Nothing bad with having your house a zoo or jungle. When I nurture my plants I feel a sense of calm and satisfaction.

Are your friends planning to take back their pets soon or did they just dump them on you cause they don't want the responsibility?

If one replaces people with animals or has more animals than friends . . . It could be considered anti-social. No offense, it's just my opinion, and I'm not necessarily referring to the OP's situation.

Not really. Look up the definition of anti social. What I will say is those who keep lots of pets or plants may do so to fill an emotional need. Sometimes people like it, they like to nurture things and it gives them a sense of satisfaction or even stress relief.

I also will say there is some people that keep lots of pets not for the reasons mentioned above. Some just think it is fun and don't know when to stop. And I bet a lot of days they feel like they don't wanna do it anymore. Kinda like the whole theme of this thread, " when is it too many pets"? Some people don't know when/how to stop and can not properly care for the animals they keep.

I don't really have much at all. Just 1 cat 5 fish tanks (not including my many fry tanks) Getting a pacman frog soon. Hopefully this month. I just have to buy the equipment and the frog. I also have a house plant that I care for. It's a white arrowhead plant. It's a little baby right now. I have had many plants before though. Also have had tons of pets before. I have had 6 guinea pigs, a russian dwarf hamster, tons of fish, hermit crabs, little crabs like fiddler crabs and red clawed crabs, birds including finches and parakeets. I really want that pacman frog as soon as possible right now. I also want a tarantula but that's probably not going to happen considering everybody in my family is freaked out by them.

My animal list is quite extensive:

5 horses
2 pot bellied pigs
5 pekin ducks
7 chickens
10 nigerian dwarf goats + 1 baby
4 dogs
2 cats
3 french lops + 4 babies
1 holland lop

In progress:

180 gal sps reef w/ 75 gal sump
120 gal brackish paludarium
110 gal mississippi map tank w/ 20 gal sump
55 gal toby puffer w/ 20 gal sump
40 gal fire bellied toad vivarium
40 gal QT system
32 gal oddball
30 gal softy reef w/ 20 gal sump
20 gal planted
10 gal Shell dweller

But don't worry, a lot of the animals I have on the list belong to our non-profit organization, Hope Farms Project, a therapeutic farm where people with traumatic brain injuries and disabilities like autism can get rural and animal-related job skills training.
