Ugh, we need fresh ray topics

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm prolly $50/week. Less if I make gel food. Average prolly 2 lbs/day.

I only have like 5 rays that are over a foot (all females). 17 are Marbles and most are the smaller ones.

How do you like the gel? Are you using mazuri or meatpie

The part I'm proudest of is the fact that NO tank at my house is a typical tank. I buy a used acrylic tank and then the work begins. Small tanks will flow 5K gph and big tanks are set up for up to 10K GPH. Every system has a "buffer" tank to increase overall water volume. I built all the filtration myself. Has been 5 years of trial and error, and I still can't build flaw free filtration. I incorporate submerged, wet/dry and moving bed bio media on my big tank, and used enough of each to support the rays if I was to remove 2/3 bio sources. The moving bed filter on the big tank will process almost 3 times the weight of thier current meals, and that's just the reactor with no help from the scrubbie wet/dry or the 50 lbs of ceramic rings. All systems are drip fed, and filtered down to 100 micron. All the rays are housed in 3 systems. To me there's nothing more satisfying then raising rays in systems I built. To me the funnest part of keeping rays is building the systems that support them replacing money with labor.

it KILLS me to say this...but damn homie..nice set up.
do you have a thread of your tanks and filtration?

Theirs lots of good threads people just need to contribute without fighting. Or fighting but don't ruin guys threads.arguements are great and joking around but theirs a few egotistical jerks on here that no matter what stir up stuff.this site used to be awsome now people are Afraid to post or just straight turned off because of the madness on this site

so true.. im gonna find another site one of these days.

atm i own 2 rays.. ive been on mfk for a few years now and own a few other oddball species, ive lurked the ray section for a long time and researched before i got my guys a few months ago now. I've learned to read, but make my own decisions about how i keep my fish. would love to see pics of your setups and a walk-threw as well DB.

my end goal is to own some leos.. atm i only have room for my retics, and my husband would like to have some marbles... though the more research and species i look at the more I'm digging the flowers.

and as much as i get a laugh out of the arguments it does get frustrating when I'm actually looking for information, help, experiences, ect. but i also know there is alot of knowledge and practical experience here, enough i generally shovel threw the crap to get too.

You have 23 rays db wow that impressive but expensive on food ain't it

My 7 rays eat 6 lbs of shrimp and week and 2lbs of smelt it's about $200 to feed 7 rays

Wow u both have high upkeep from feeding them rays...my pair costs me $50-$60 per month to feed and I feed live foods.

Looks like you and db are much more alike than you thought. Potential best friends just misunderstood and off on the wrong foot

Funny, this thread has turned out to be the best thread in at least week in my opinion. Some of everything and friendly for a record number of posts.

Just part of the equasion. You should see the electricity and water bills.....

Water company usually calls every other month about "a leaking faucet, or toilet". Ususally I only get calls when it's over 11K gallons/month, but even at the heaviest months (20K gallons) water is still cheaper then treating a tank with meds...... lol

I had to go through and replace all my pumps with more efficient ones so I could try to bring my electric bill down to a weeks pay.

It sucks, but if you get home at the end of a bad day and the rays cheer you up it's worth it.

funny you said that..
we have been talking today and pretty much pin pointed the point where things went wrong. we talked, sorted it out and now i am carrying our love child.

I have a one retic in a 110 gallon pond right now and was thinking of building a larger filtration system for it, I was wondering if it would be better to build a stand to put the pond on and build a sump or make an overhead filtration system for it?
