My Red Devil killed my smaller Tiger Oscar :(

is english your second language? i asked a simple question and get cute grammar school insults in return. simple question, what is your real world experience with red devils? do you comprehend my question or the point i'm trying to make about large, aggressive cichlid communities? you can flame back all you want, its kind of cute ;)

THIS thread is not about your egocentric obsession to argue & disqualify posts which are intending to help the op with one clearly defined problem.

Saying "this can never be a tankmate with that" all depends on the specific fish. There are tendancies (you know, that a red devil could kill everything), but your mileage will vary depending on the specific temperament of the specific fish, the tank, the decor, the location of the tank, the age of the fish, etc. etc. etc.. Drawing conclusions (and arguing redundantly) about two fish one would (or did) house together is not dependent upon those two species as tankmates happening in the past - what you have read, what you have seen, your past experiences, your common sense, all that does not mean anything about taking Fish A and sticking him in the same tank as Fish B. Anything can, and will, happen. In other words, you both are wrong...or alternatively...you both are right.

the only ones arguing are you two, and pretty weak arguments i might add with your great in depth knowledge of keeping red devils :) i think the op got the point, don't keep red devils in a 55 with weak tankmates, i wouldn't keep them in a 55 altogether but i stated that numerous times, you must have missed that in your inane attempt to flame and discredit me.

your inaccurate assessment about my posts and personality is not helping the problem either, no matter how much you want to bold it ;)

well put, especially with cichlids, you just never know until you try. there might be things that can help sway aggression in your favor, i've tried them all (tank size, all males, lots of hiding places, etc) but in the end, there are some fish that can only be wet pets regardless of size. its one of the things that makes cichlid keeping frustrating but its that aggressive/bold type of personality that we all love about these fish. they are by far my favorite aquarium fish next to saltwater triggers.

Your inane disregard for Thread etiquette IS the problem. You ignore bold, to argue with attempted emphasis.
Again, this thread is NOT about YOU & your inapplicable input for THE OP.
Start your own thread topic for ppl who care to become equipped for your relentless point, which absolutely no one here wants to have to spare the op from..

So I guess to wrap it up.

If you have a big enough tank it could work, the OP doesn't have a big enough tank so It didn't work.

That's it.

RARE. plus, "right size tank" "and fish" is waaay too vague. altogether just an awful bit of hope to dish out.

do you seriously expect to see this person get a 600 gallon setup????

I understood what he said clear as day. Why are you so confused? Or should we just call you a troll? You not once made a comment to help, and/or regarding what the OP said.

Do you have something against clekchau? This was the first comment you made in many inane comments on this thread. The OP made a thread saying OOps I messed up. Then MN-Rebel your quick to jump in and say get rid of the RD, ALL RD's are killers. Then the OP says that he is keeping the RD in the 55by himself and using the futuristic larger tank for his Oscars. So Clekchau basically said, yep 55 is to small, DAH, but RD's can be kept in a community if housed in a proper tank. Thats it. Which is completely true. Are RD's destined to be wet pets. alone in solitude cause so many of you dont know how, or are unable to make it work? For those individuals I say, you shouldnt own one.

I myself own a few RD's and all of them are in a community tank. Both males are 12.5" Do I have them in a 55, 125, 200? Nope, they are in a 240, coexisting quite well. They have been coexisting quite well since they were 2".

So back to petspoiler: Clekchau didnt say go get a huge tank so that it can work, go,go, get one now. So why you starting something that does not need to be started? After reading all of these ignorant posts, it looks clear to me that clekchau was simply pointing out that RD's can be kept in a community if done correctly. So you all need to flex your computer forum muscles, and prove to the rest of us that your comments are completely ignorant by jumping on him for, God knows why.

Why, I ask? Wait dont answer that.

OP- Putting a RD in a 55 with other fish was dumb. Putting any combination of Cichlids in a 55 is dumb, even a JD and the Oscars. Can Rd's be a community fish? Yes they can, if your willing to spend for the proper accommodations. Will the RD be a great wet pet in the tank alone? Sure he will, in my experiences with RD's that are a great wet pet and very personable. Did the lfs pull a fast one on you? Yes, I think they did.

So you tried and you learned the hard way. Like a couple of the more helpful posts said, learn more about your fish before you combine and/or purchase them. If I ever buy a larger fish from a lfs, that is in a community setting, I always spend several minutes watching its behavior. I dont know how many times I changed my mind on a purchase at the last minute, due to something that I spotted while watching.

Mods, can you close this thread now. The post on 9-10 @ 6:27 was the start of the unnecessary bashing of someone that was just stating his opinion on his experiences.
