I'm happy with my 1.5" drains. I don't know what your overall plan is but I had my overflows placed so there was a 4' gap in the center of the tank so I could fit one uncut background panel. then I cut another panel to fit the sides. Less seams.

My plan is to have corner overflows so that I can get my background in the middle. I have a mag 12 on the 220 that I want to carry over and if i need another I will get it.

My thinking is having the two corners run to my 125 or so sump. Each one will to a 3-4 plastic storage bin. The top basket will be pre-filter such as floss, the second chamber is filter sock, the last chamber will be bio. Ill put the pump(s) in the middle to return and the heaters under the trays. Ill try and get a diagram up to show my thinking.

I don't want to much movement that my bio wont be as effective if that makes sense. That is why I'm thinking the fx5 to go with it to concentrate on just mechanical.

Just throwing ideals out there and if I do the mag 12 what size piping do I need and if I do two mag 12's, what size. I call always put valves where necessary also.

I tried running sock inside storage drawers. I found it to be a complete pita. Also the setup will depend on what bio media you decide on. Obviosly some do better submerged and some are meant for wet try type setups.i would do floss in the top drawer, then like 100 or 200 micron filter pads in the second drawer and then ciramic rings or scrubbies in the bottom drawer. you could always add a couple media bags and run them right next to the pump pre-filters. 2 mag 12's should be fine. I always like the redundancy of 2 pumps in case one fails. You could run larger pumps if you wanted to though. Overall I love the design chris.

It seems like a waste of space in the center for just the pumps. You could run both drains to the left and have long filter socks. Lots of bio media in the center and both pumps on the right. I have dual mag12s but they're dialed back with valves a decent amount.

Socks are all you need for mechanical, if you could do 50 micron that's quite clear. Make/buy a holder to slip them on and off and maintenance is a breeze. The drawers just make more places for detritus to build up.

I appreciate all the input and below youtube link is how I did my sock in my 55 sump that was on the 180. What I'm thinking is doing two of these and instead of them hanging on the side of the tank, have them hang on the first baffle to make them lower and kill the noise. Sound like a plan?

All you have to do to reduce noise is run longer socks and have the drain line under the surface of the water. Even if 3 quarters of the sock is out of water as long as the drain line into the sock is submerged that is all that matters.

^^agreed.

I wasn't trying to criticize your plan I appreciate the time you've put into it. My main point is to think about keeping it simple whatever you choose. I just cleaned out my sump for the first time in a year and with this open design it was easy.
