These are scombs, right?

Regards.

2nd pic appears to be an armatus, I could be wrong. When they are large like that the classic orange fin becomes less colorful and prominent. But white banding on the anal fin suggests armatus as well as head shape. First pic im unsure of.

Either way, cant wait for mine to get that big.

I still think there's something wrong with the size, in some regions of Brazil the minimum size is 50cm for slaughter. They stipulate that measure based on an average size for the species.

Or even the organs of Brazil don't know how to identify the payaras well, it is not unlikely lol.

I think the most likely prospect is that people just don't know the difference between the species. Especially individuals who just collect them for food or take a passing interest in internet searches. A lot of pictures on the internet are wildly mislabled. Like Trev said, both fish you posted are undoubtedly armatus. Misidentification by fishermen isn't unheard of either. Here in the states there are a stunning number of people who call any bass a largemouth, any gar an alligator gar and any big catfish a channel cat. I'd imagine something similar happens down there, too.

Good points Rob.I can't tell a largemouth from any other type of bass and most stores here only use the term alligator when labeling their gars for sale and I really can't tell them apart either.

DB Junkie, what's your opinions about Raphs? Are less sensitive than scombs? When the fishery reopened in March I'll try to capture a raphiodon, they abound in my area. If you can do some kind of comparison between the scombs and raphs I thank you very much! ;)

They are VERY skiddish, maybe even more then the Hydro species, but I have no idea why they seem to do better. All I know is I had one year after year in the same conditions as the Hydros and it lived almost 5 years.
