TV upgrade: LCD or LED?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Majorhavok,
Modern panasonic plasma models ST and up use a louvre filter that really helps block reflection. If you see my picture several posts back, I have all the lights on in the background and you cant see me in the reflection; which is an issue with other brand's plasmas, such as samsung's lower models or LG.
We no longer need to express the facts about plasmas, after all this is a fish forum ;)

I'm with you. :) I have a Panasonic ST-50(series 2?) but maybe they have gotten better in the last year or so. I'm 100% plasma guy, but I try to tell people the pro's and con's and they are misinformed or inexperienced so i want to make sure the facts get out before people believe the best tech available is dead when it's far from it. At the end of the day if marketting or misinformation rules the day, the consumer loses ultimately. The Samsu,ng Plasmas are fantastic but from what I have seen, their LED-LCD's are nowhere near as good. Not sure about LG, but from what I have seen/read lately Panasonic and Samsung own the high end HDTV/plasma market.

Every tech has a best application. My plasma would make a crappy smartphone screen, and as some have pointed out would be lousy for still photography monitors. I just want people to know what they are good at before they make up their mind.

I'm also willing to accept there are better things than plasma under some circumstances.. take Best Buy's magnolia collection which is only the best. There are just as high ratings on LED's as plasmas, although they are sure expensive:

I know, I used to work there ;)
However, I would not go as far to say some LEDs are better than plasmas. The only LED TV that I will admit is better than a plasma (except for Panasonic's VT model or even GT) is the Elite. It has great contrast and black levels, but still has some minor motion blur aside from being $$$.
Other than that, sony makes an HX929 series that is backlit which I believe is better than all of samsung's super bright edge-light LEDs, but still not close to any of the ST models and up which use the Infinite Pro Black 2.

The VT series is superior because of its black levels measured at .002 and 10 point gamma scale. This TV was so amazing out of the box that once it was professionally ISF calibrated, it looked worse! THX mode looked even better than the calibrated, so in turn, waste of the extra $200. Also, the VT is the only plasma to have a 96Hz processor vs. the standard 60Hz (plasmas multiply this by 10)

I really miss the old Kuros :( they had the most amazing picture quality and deepest blacks (aside from the VT) but they also had bad heating issues.

That's funny, I found those Magnolia people really knew their AV, and nothing they told me ever turned out to be less than the best when researched or independently reviewed. Great Great stuff they sell and worth the price.

And I know what you mean.. Pioneer really was great.
