My GATF/TATF Growout Shoal Thread

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Looks good, Danny! I look forward to watching them grow. The GATF in the second pic looks really nice, he has an impressive jaw on him.

I have 8,850 GPH in a 150. It's quite windy lol. I've had Max in here since April 2012 and 2.5". He's 10-11 inches now. He seems to be beginning to get stressed in the 150. I really need to get to work on the big tank. :/ I feel the current really helps with their need to swim.

See above, my guy has grown less than an inch a month.

If Leis are surface fish like the SA aros, I don't see the tigers bothering him. I've kept GATF, VATF and TATF with aros and haven't had an issue yet that wasn't started by the aros. The ATF seem to ignore surface fish and bottom fish.

Were the ATFs and aros adults?

I read over your entire 650 build, and its pretty impressive. I really like the idea of the submerged webcam. How is it setup? Is the computer connected to the tank webcam always on? I was thinking it would be a great idea since my tank is at my shop to turn the tankcam computer on when i leave and have a program that will have a setting auto accept all incoming calls or something that way i can webcam from home when ever i want.

Check out m_class2g's lei with a ton of atf and a couple gatf

Ya i've seen it. They are still babies. not in their full killing potentials. Well good luck. i'm considering in putting an aro with an armatus once i get a bigger tank.

No, juveniles. Aggression with both species is worse when young.

You saw that monster goliath destroy that silver aro right? It's so hard to believe that it's the younglings that are the aggresive ones. Why is it?

I have seen that video. I am convinced what we saw was predation not aggression. That aro was probably 1/2 to 2/3rds the length of the GATF and narrow enough to be swallowed whole. The GATF was also in very rough shape and was probably not cared for or fed properly. To that GATF, the aro would have looked quite appetizing.

One GATF eating a much smaller arowana in my opinion is by no means an indicator that those two types of fish cannot be kept together. I've always advised people to make sure their fish are comparable in size to start as aros grow much faster and this faster growth will eliminate the GATF's ability to try to make a meal of it. The GATF in the video was likely 4-6 years old, the aro was likely only a couple months to a year old. That's bad juju and I would have recommended against it.

When dealing with these two types of fish (ATF and SA aros), it is my personal experience and the general knowledge on the site that:

1- ATF, once broken off of live, aren't overly aggressive. They tend to be quarrelsome with fish that looks like them, but are likely to either ignore or be scared of anything that's too big for them to eat. They also tend to completely ignore anything that swims on the surface or the bottom. Granted, big ones eventually develop a supreme air of confidence, but it doesn't mean they will become aggressive.

2- Young silver/black aros tend to be quite aggressive. But...

3- ...Those same Osteoglossids will (normally) mellow out as they become larger. They (normally) only maintain their interspecific aggressive tendencies when kept in congeneric groups.

Granted, every fish is an individual. You can always encounter a fish that behaves nothing like what its supposed to, so of course these are generalizations. I do still feel however that as long as they're broken off of live and as long as the aro is the same size or larger than the ATF to start, this combo is one that will work nearly all of the time.

Sorry if this seems off topic but I have always wondered, how do you feed pellets with that much flow in a tank? Cause thats like a 59x turn over rate wouldnt tbe pellets just get blown around alot?

They do, but with how I have the current set up they pellets all gget blown to the left side of the tank and since I use floating pellets, they stay on the surface. The fish have no problems eating them.

My leichardti is just in there to grow out, its around 6-7" im waiting until its big enough to put into another tank with black arowanas so you dont have to worry. My plans are to put the tigers in their own seperate tank.

The webcam is connected directly to my PC. My tank is in the basement and the PC is upstairs. So I can watch my fish any time. It's not difficult to make a waterproof box but the only think I don't like is that most webcams have a very narrow field of view. Try and find the widest lens you can. You can set yours up too but you may have to keep the PC at the shop on all the time to host the webcam.

Day 2

Yesterday there seemed to be two separate groups, one with three gatf, and another one with 2 taft and 3 barbs. Today they move in one group, all gatf, taft, barbs. As usual i fed the leichardti with the sticks, no one else was interested. I then I tried smelt, i took the skin off and cut them in very narrow and long strips similar to the rosy red shape. I have all of my powerheads on oneside. I tossed in a couple of the feeder shaped smelt, it blew the smelt to the other side almost like they were swimming. I am very surprised. Both the taft ate a couple pieces, as well as one of the big gatf. Another observation is that they are less spazzy than yesterday. I am still amazed as to the the gatf eating the smelt.

I also turned off the light and was able to take multiple pictures from my iphone. These are a lot better than yesterday:
