That surprizes me. From the discription of what the poster was looking for I got the impression he wanted more of a property guardian as opposed to a personal protection dog. I thought a GP would have be a great dog for his 5-6 acres. The hair yes I can see that I have alonge haired dor that sheds enough hair to make 3 dogs out of.
I think Pyrenees have lost it, being gentler in nature, they were among the first to be converted into family dogs. A bit like the saint bernard...
If you lke the genre, you look into its cousin, The spanish mountain mastiff. Loos 95% alike and has not lost it.
The pet industry along with pure show lines yes but there are some good working lines available. This is and interesting artical about some good working livestock gauards. How much propaganda it is I don't know but a great read none the less.

Used to love Pyrenees, till I discovered the Hovawart![]()
I didn't mean to say that a Pyrenees can't be a good property guardian (we never locked a door growing up), just that they aren't true "guard" dogs like the ones that Miguel mentioned. Their propensity to roam comes from the fact that they would roam with the flock, but good training and/or good fences can overcome that tendency. I, as a big fan of Pyrenees, agree that they could be an excellent choice. Miguel doesn't like them because they're French - neighbor issues, you know....![]()
