Ooh, those i love. Your bouvier i love.

Thought you meant the Bearnois...:)

Hell no. Those really are sissys:)
What I love about bouviers is their(mental and physical) strength. They were once used to pull ships on the canals for people who could not afford ponys :D

That surprizes me. From the discription of what the poster was looking for I got the impression he wanted more of a property guardian as opposed to a personal protection dog. I thought a GP would have be a great dog for his 5-6 acres. The hair yes I can see that I have alonge haired dor that sheds enough hair to make 3 dogs out of.

I didn't mean to say that a Pyrenees can't be a good property guardian (we never locked a door growing up), just that they aren't true "guard" dogs like the ones that Miguel mentioned. Their propensity to roam comes from the fact that they would roam with the flock, but good training and/or good fences can overcome that tendency. I, as a big fan of Pyrenees, agree that they could be an excellent choice. Miguel doesn't like them because they're French - neighbor issues, you know....

I think Pyrenees have lost it, being gentler in nature, they were among the first to be converted into family dogs. A bit like the saint bernard...

If you lke the genre, you look into its cousin, The spanish mountain mastiff. Loos 95% alike and has not lost it.

I think you are very correct about their cuddly nature, they are big teddy bears. They are only aggressive with other dogs/predators, very seldom with humans, which is due to the fact that they are livestock guardians, not property/people guardians. Saint Bernards are just big, ugly drool fountains....

The pet industry along with pure show lines yes but there are some good working lines available. This is and interesting artical about some good working livestock gauards. How much propaganda it is I don't know but a great read none the less.

Awesome article, I'm going to forward it to my mom. Those dogs weren't too pretty for you, were they Miguel? ;)

Used to love Pyrenees, till I discovered the Hovawart :)

I had to search "Hovawart". Good looking dogs, but too small and fine-featured for my taste.

don't feel bad Dan.. Miquel doesn't like a collie either.... you may not want a collie or a pyrenees because of the hair.... but to me they are the best dogs a family can own.......... great in every way... my collie is definitly a watch dog.. he is just not aggressive... thats the difference.. dobie is watch dog and probably would be aggressive if needed to be......for me my collies hair is worth every bit of having such a wonderful loving gorgeous dog....... miguel just does not go for the pretty..lol

@ Lizzy and Dan! Hahahahah, you guys really do know me and know how to make fun of me :):)

I have nothing against the French, Dan. I have the spaniards between me and them :)

And i love Dobbies....but for me to get a Dobie i would have to have 100 dogs before..it is a bit like choosing a kids name....some come out front :)
