BAMBUSA!!! :P

Elopichthys bambusa or the Yellowcheek would be the Siberian equivalent in weight and length.....just amazing, I had never heard of it before; who knew there were other piscavorous cyprinids besides the Mahseer! The other Amazing thing is that one of its cousins the Sacramento Pikeminnow still gets over 40inches long (has been known to get over 50 inches in exceptional cases), WOW!

i thought bambusas were the biggest carp species. What's the biggest then?

Siamese giant carp, Catlocarpio siamensis. Can get ten feet long and up to 600 pounds.

Man I feel the same way! I'm seriously gonna try to get in touch with some of these captive breeders and see if they'd sell me one! :D

Wow......is the Siamese giant carp a Piscavore? One day (God willing) I will own a Northern Pikeminnow.

What really fascinates me is the fact that these fish are described as having "long, hooked pharyngeal teeth". I'd love to see a picture of that...

I found a pic of those teeth for you :p

These fish are really interesting

No, they're herbivores. Tor putitora is the largest carnivorous cyprinid, it has historically been documented at sizes of up nine feet and 120 pounds. The bambusa is right on its heels with six feet and 110 pounds. Its also interesting to note that while they're not really visible, bambusa have very well developed and effective teeth. You do NOT want your finger in that mouth!

Though to be honest, I imagine that in modern times you're probably more likely to catch a huge bambusa than a huge golden mahseer.

68 pound bambusa, biggest I could find-

I don't see them. Pharyngeal teeth are the teeth are the tooth patches at the back of the throat, not the teeth in the jaws (which these fish don't have).

Didnt know that, my bad. I guess that makes sense that they would be at the back. I wonder how these fish take down big salmon and trout with no front teeth?

I doubt they'd eat truly big salmon, but I have no problem imagining one of the big pikeminnows of yore swallowing up a big trout or a moderately sized salmon. They'd likely swipe at it in an ambush attack head first and use their pharyngeal teeth to subdue the struggling prey item until it is subdued enough to eat. I can imagine a hundred pound pikeminnow swallowing eight pound trouts and salmon whole and being able to handle up to about a 20 pound prey item.

It breaks my heart to see such a large, dynamic American predator going extinct. These are charismatic fish that need to be brought to the attention of the public in order to save them in a manner similar to what has been done with gar.

Even today, there is an active eradication program for the northern pikeminnow due to their efficacy at eating trout and salmon.

edit- This is what they're killing off:
