Baby bowfin grow out thread

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
got home today and almost cried. 80% of the bowfin were dead. There were rotting corpses on the bottom... There were a few alive but they dont look like they will make it. I knew i shouldnt have trusted my friend. I cleaned out the tank and did a 60% water change. I got some backups from my pond but they are much smaller. The few that survived the tank are swimming like they are drunk and they are bloated. I put a little epsom salt hoping it will clean out their systems. Ill try and keep yall posted.

I took out the rest of the fish from the first batch. I think there were parasites in them. It looked like there were tiny red worms coming out of their anuses. How should I treat the ones that are alive in my tank? What medicine should I use?

Wow that really sucks. I dont know what to tell you to do honestly. But what I will say is that instinct says to put in a little bit of parasite remover, some salt, keep water quality clean, and hope for the best

I'm keeping the water very clean and putting salt in the tank. What type of parasite medicine should I use?

Baby bowfin are doing good. They are really starting to recognize me as a caretaker and not a crazy giant monkey trying to eat them. When I'm scooping up extra food scraps they sometimes try and swim into the net to eat food scraps. Still feeding them chopped worms and gambusia daphnia. I'm going to get some bloodworms soon.

I had an interesting experience with some baby bowfins myself. For some odd reason they died off until I only had two left, I split them up and they were both fine for a while. I have no idea why but for some reason I didn't have a good experience with them in a group and if you can keep one separately I would do it.

I usually don't like giving my opinion on ethical topics of fish keeping, but you don't think 400 fry is a little excessive to take from a lake. I am sure the bowfin population will rebound and reach its carrying capacity. Just something to think about in the future.

You also need to get some better pictures, looking forward to updates. If you can't get a good picture post a video.

Some friend.
