what kind of moron would steal a bike then put it on Craigslist thats probably the quickest way to get caught unless he posted it in another state

Newsflash, Craigslist is probably atleast 50% stolen goods. Police won't do any thing either. Not over small items such as bikes, electronics and gadget. Too hard to follow the paper trial to prove its stolen. You could claim it was sold to you

A friend of mine found his car stereo being sold on craigslist. He met with the guy to confirm it was his, then called the police. He got on the local news!

If you ask the bike seller for the serial #, he will probably disappear, it's too obvious. Ask to go see the bike, then record the number but don't buy it. Call the cops, if it's stolen they will have it in a database. Whatever happens after that, you've done the right thing and your conscience is clear.
THIS,,,, and if nothing else they have an idea where to start looking for the next stolen bike... this isn't rocket science ...

possession of stolen goods IS the crime

Do a search on Craigslist for "stolen bikes" cause I've seen people post ads about stolen things on there and if you find anything similar then go for it and call the cops. But without any substantial evidence, cops most likely can't do anything for you other then wait and see if the owner reports it stolen, if he doesn't then that's all on the owner.

how do we (MOSTLY all good folks )END UP in a debate over the PROPER course of action when we all KNOW WHAT IT IS ... HOW ABOUT we at least NOT talk our friend out of acting responsibly

possession of stolen goods IS the crime

So lee if you go buy a new nook on Craigslist today, you yourself committed a crime by possessing the ereader? Knowing most transactions will be cash in a public location, you have no paper trial on how it came in your possession

I hope you're ready to pay the price
