Grave News on Lake Erie

yeah and on snakehead and other invasive specie! that is a pretty damn good idea. If they do become a problem and I do smoke them like MN suggests and its to my liking which ill be surprised if it won't (I basically eat all seafood) I'm gonna catch em like mad haha. it'll be so damn easy. teach a bunch of people how to do it to cut down on the big ones.

the whole redneck tourney is a great idea, even if you just had a couple extra guys with huge wide nets snagging ones that don't land in the boat you'd get so many of the things, multiply that by 30 or 40 participants and your taking hundreds out. to the badly infested areas in the mid-south area that would be legit

Snakeheads are supposed to taste pretty dang good too. They became invasive after they escaped from Asain food marts or something.

A real delicacy in Asia. I think i've eaten some when I was a kid. can't remember the taste.

Canada should release a potent cannabis compound in the area of lake Erie that they inhabit and spread the rumor that eating the Lake Eire carp is they best high a stoner can get. Problem solved!

J/K^

I recently saw in on Bourdains No Reservations, it was northern snakehead cold smoked over oolong tea, seems delicious

I'm sorry - but I just can't get the thought of a giant carp whacking someone in the head out of my mind. It's scary, but hilarious at the same time. I remember when Fabio got smacked by a pigeon...

haha right, its hilarious until you hear its killed a couple people already. Not on lake erie but on the missi river I beliebe

I've never ate them but have fillet a bunch for cut bait. The meat is pure white unlike common carp. Not very oily either so I don't know how good they would be smoked. I have had them in some of my favorite walleye and other spots for over 10 years. The fishing hasn't changed. I have yet to see a proven study of the decline of natives. In theory they are stealing the plankton needed by fry. The shad population has gone up in these areas and they feed on the same thing. Just and observation and I am not defending them in any way.

KY has just opened a 2.5 million facility to process them and ship them to china. My guess is if the market is there commercial fisherman will gear up for them. Problem is the unplanned natives that will be caught in the nets and discarded to avoid fines.

Just saw this and had to share this article on gator gar.
They can handle some cold. They are being reintroduced in IL. And it seems they have the same hope as some of you that they can help remove carp.

Also the spunky bottoms were the gars are being reintroduced in brown county so western central il, winters get pretty frosty if they can make it there the great lakes shouldnt be that long of a shot

it boggles me to see a 10+ foot gator gar. Too bad those are pretty extinct. People just love to spear fish these monsters. Such a shame.

so what do you guys saying you would never be able to do this have to say now? haha there is a reason they are still around, they seem to be very adaptable, not just gators but all gar. hell if they start spawning in Illinois and I do end up working in Fisheries then I will reccomend the hell out of them to control game+invasive fish specie. 17 lbs in 14 months?! that growth is awesome for the first round in the new habitat
