Well I know Ken know his stuff and all but this is not accurate at all. They are not the same not even close. I brought my Rio Blanco's wild collected from Ken actually and I can tell you the Blanco strain is very different in looks (coloration and pattern) then any from the Copan River I have ever seen or kept. The Blanco are much more orange than the Copan version which are a much deeper or darker red. Maybe it was a general statement because yes they are very similar obviously but if you were to put 20 and 20 of each in a tank and stand back. You would be able to tell them apart will no issue. Just as if you were to put 20 gorillas blues and 20 normal blue Umbee in a tank together one can easily tell them apart.

hahahah well lets do that on a different thread or PM don't want to take WB's thread too far off track :) Also to challenge lol you have to have an issue with them and produce a fish you want to debate with :) hahah

You totally took my post out of context, I was agreeing with the post, then asked "in a funny way by saying I challenge you" to see the fish you were talking about in the post you wrote. There was not a challenge in a literal sense nor anything else that could or should be limited to PM or different thread bro. I just appreciated your kind words regarding my article about gorillus being shafted and really just wanted to see the ornamental fish talked about in your post is all.

Okay back to the thread. Worldbelow I would like to get my hands on a nice male from you when they are ready Hit me up once they are thanks. Chris is going to send a couple of his my way again to grow out as well. Looking for that stunner to grow out over the winter and put in my new pond at winters end for the summer next year to blow it up in size.

Awesome there are people wanting to do such with these fish! Which are you getting from Chris?

Rio Blanco is a tributary of the Rio Copan, so RTMs from both are the same fish.

According to Ken (fishfarm), who collected them: It's real simple, we collect in the Rio Blanco because it's a smaller tributery to the Copan and easier to collect, The Rio Blanco's in the hobby came from a location about a mile from where the Blanco runs into the Copan, so basically they are all the same fish. All the fish from the Blanco and Copan came from 4 collecting trips we made from 2006-2009. Ken

Since all of the RTM stock that are in the hobby (and likely ever will be in the hobby) are from a very few wild fish (collected by Ken and Co. on the 4 trips), differences in individuals and (intentional or unintentional) line breeding is what results in the differences in red coloration (i.e. people tending to breed for more color and other aquarist-desired traits).

Back to Umbees: I could see why TFH or a general aquarium pub might not be interested in articles about Umbees. They're simply too large and aggressive for nearly all aquarists.

While the introduction of a new variant of umbee might seem like a big deal to some of us, reality is that new variants and varieties of fish come into the hobby all of the time. Heck, a buddy of mine just got back from a collecting trip to Peru and saw/collected bunches of Apistos, tetras and other fish he's never seen before (i.e. probably new to the hobby).

Matt

Umbee's too large and aggressive for nearly all aquarist? The same publication that accepts and gives add space to MFK? MONSTER fish keepers? I do not have an exact number of members this forum has but I can say a great deal of them keep fish that grow larger than Umbee's some having real attitude problems as well. I'm not being a jerk about it so please do not take offense, I'm just saying I bet that decision was more political than anything.

They were caught roughly a mile apart - by Ken and the folks with him - where the Copan and its tributary connect...the river and the stream might have different names but they're a single body of water...so there is nothing preventing the free flow of genes among fish that happen to be in one side or the other of the river.

That a handful of individual fish collected in one area or another happen to exhibit more or less color than others has more to do with variations in individuals among the population than the "strains" being different...because they're not...and they can't be....because they share the same genetic pool.

Or maybe the article was poorly written. Or didn't meet their editorial guidelines. Or they felt that they already had enough cichlid articles. Or whatever.

Submit it to Amazonas or Cichlid News or ACA's BB... or just post it on here instead of assuming that it must be a grand conspiracy.

Huh? I read that three times and came away with that you think I'm skinny, bald, and enjoy playing the skin flute. Mix these guys up all you want in your own tanks, but once they hit the market I see nothing good coming of it. All I was alluding to.

I will say that I've never once complained to the moderators. Several times I've logged back on and you've gotten the threads shut down while I was away and I never got a chance to respond. Feel free to check with any of them. Not sure if they can see how many "complaints" I've done - but all I've ever done is report threads that belong in the hybrid section.
