So how strict are you at keeping a biotope?

Certain species are captive bred so personally if their not wild caught it dosn't make a difference to me with bio type setups

Setting up a tank with fish all from the same continent can result with as much variety as throwing random fish from all over the world together. Unless you stick to the same water system that the fish would naturally interact in, it isn't a true bio tope in my opinion.

I have agree with you. I have never understood the concept of biotopes based on all the animals being from the same continent agruement. It's not a biotope at that point. It's simply a bunch of fish you like that happen to be from the same very rough geographic area.

I would hate to see those principles used in zoo design. They'ld have a sloth, a polar bear, an alligator, and a desert tortise all in the same "biotope" enclosure. Don't worry, it's cool, they're all from the same continent.

I agree completely, and that is why I always refer to my set up as "Amazon-themed" or something to that effect, it is by no means a "biotope" true to one particular region of the system. TBH I'm not sure why the thought of adding clown loaches pains me so, given that the tank isn't a true biotope (though most of the fish would inhabit fairly similar environments across the system).

Agreed. A true biotope would be fish from the same location point within a river system.

Almost every fish in my 300 is South American, however, its a pretty large continent lol. Thousands of miles separate some species I keep in the wild.

when I have thought about adding CLs to my already Not Correct tank, the thing that puts me off is how a whole group of them has so much of their own life & character, & those "pluses" can become a dominant focus in the tank.
Could that be it for you.?

basically a biotope would be basically something like u have a ten gallon and that ten gallon has the EXACT same conditions and fish as a ten gallon size area where u plan ur biotope to be. that's the PERFECT biotope

What? A biotope is a collection of fish from one small part, of a very specific region or river system where those fish and only those fish are found. Is that what you were trying to say?

Nearest I've got to a biotope is my Betta tank, cause it contains only a Betta. Other then that I have a Jar with CA cichlids and a Black Shark, an Oscar with a Murray Cod and Silver Dollars with Clown Loaches. Kudos to those who keep strict biotopes, I'm sure it can be painful sourcing fish, plants and decor to match a single river from a distant land and they generally look impressive too. But for me once you put fish in a glass box it that all seems a little pointless, variety is one of the greatest joys of this hobby.
