You can give your fish bloat from eating too much. A flowerhorn will eat until it dies. My guy gets about 30-40 medium pellets a day. 15-20 in the morning and that much at night. That would probably equal about 15 large pellets a day. Do be careful with over feeding. Your fish Can become obese just like people which is unhealthy.

ok. well its very hard to determine the "correct amount" to feed him lol. ive gotten mixed messages the dude who sold me the fish said feed him 20 pellets twice a day. But i feed him the medium sized ones. so far ive been feeding him 20 a day, once a day cause i thought u dont need to feed them twice a day. But he hasn't really grown so idk.. Is there a rule of thumb or something to determine how to feed a flowerhorn? also, when cleaning out the carbon, do i throw out the old carbon or leave it in there and dump in the new carbon?
 
also, his gut (belly) looks bloated or kind of puffy like he has a beer belly or something i didnt notice it before but hes had it there for months. Is it something i should be worried about? his poop looks fine. His belly just looks kinda bloated or fat or whatever u wanna call it its like a bulge coming out.
 
In regards to earlier comments, I only feed my fish the small pellets three times a day. Trust me he is not over fed. In reference to your bloated FH: If your fish looks bloated I would hold off on feeding him for 24 hours because he may be constipated. If he still looks bloated, I would take some of his pellets and soak them in distilled water with dissolved Epson Salt which will help clear his stomach in a healthy natural way.
 
Ummmmm you guys are crazy on feeding not trying to up set anyone but u should only feed your fish what it can eat in a minute or two no more so mine eats about 5 to 6 pellets twice a day and after your fish is mature u should ad more veggies to his her diet I feed mine veddgie wafers every other day with his pellets. I only feed high quality foods grand osaki, grand sumo, xo. Im thinking of trying a new one farm land tokyo I think its called. But change it up dont feed the same food every day every feeding. Mine loves blood worms and shrimp bit I try to limit what I give him. Also for the guy experiencing bloat STOP feeding your fish now give it a good week if in the first couple of days it doesn't go down u need epsom salt use a dropper to get it into its belly or take the best rout get some clear. When he is healthy again slow way down on feeding him please u are going to kill it with love. Every week u need to fast him for a day I fast mine twice a week and never on a schedule keep it guessing. Any way my two cents take it for what it is.

Oh and tank mate's dont get a pleco they will kill your fh one of the most beautiful fh ive ever seen in my life and may be the most beutiful fh I will ever see was killed by pleco the fish was spunky. In a 110 u could do another short body with a divider or even a regular or any fh for that mater just divide the tank plenty of room for more.

Maybe your flowerhorn wasnt aggressive enough and got killed....
 
Wasn't mine I would never in my wildest dream be able to afford spunky!! Its not the aggression they suck slime coat off fish at night I would seriously advise against it but take it or leave it. And really u dont know who spunky is?
