There is no need to cull anything. Unless it is for mercy for the fish because it is so bad that there will be no one that would wanna keep them.


to ppl who do that because they don't like the look of what they created, you will get your KarMA. It is actually already cruel we keep them in tanks for our enjoyment (especially the wild fish).

ppl who feel culling is part of the game; know your rights and wrongs and stop being followers.

If you good breeder you shouldnt be culling n the frst place.. U should be breeding quality fish why you culling? A good breeder should have quality FHs and cull very less.. If you have to cull more than %50 of your batch then that's not quality, that's sickly and unhealthy batch

You tell them Troy. lol.... I have had a few fish others said cull turn out to be better than the ones I was told to hang on to. For an example a rt that was a pale yellow at 3 inches that I kept that turned into a red/orange color by the time she was 5 inches or my pearled mostly white texas x rd that proved fertile. I don't know about some of you but I prefer a male pale rt thats fertile over a high end colored male rt that is sterile. Or while we are talking hybrids how many types exist because someone raised them up to adulthood to find out that they were stunning and worth the time to keep.

Animalguy... I understand where your coming from with this point to where I have a question to ask. If you had my short body female... would you breed her? But before you answer let me fill you in a little on her.
She has a crooked, kinked, zigzag spine... BUT I never rescued her from her siblings. Matter of fact she has been dominant over them all her life. So I believe she would have made it in the wild. Only reason I won't breed her is because of her kinked spine in which she is SLIGHTLY convex on one side and concave on the other. Not very noticeable but it is there. I also have seen bp that have the same issue... go figure. But I can honestly say it does not hinder their movement at all so that's why I asked the question. Maybe just few get the bulge on one side or the other because of how the spine lines up but do you think all her fry would have this same issue?

I heard that too... I've also thought about using ugly(not as attractive) ducklings to swans. Just risking time if they don't turn out right. Lol

Crush there are different types of culling for different reasons. I cull many of my fry from possible breeders because they are missing multiple desired traits and/or display several I do not want to have set into my projects. Some of these go to others who like them or to a store, some are used as dithers with other fish and still others with some type of health issue go as feeders to my turtles.
For my slow to go fish I was keeping them for more than their color or lack of it so it did not matter if they had faded to a nice color or not.

Personally I don't have alot of space for a million grow outs and only want to grow the best of the best while also not wanting to release a bunch of b and c grade fish. Everything I'm spawning now has still throw some variation so culling is just the right thing to do. Not all hybrids are equal quality wise. The variation in quality should be less as traits are fixed into strains along the way but there will still be good, bad, and great. You guys breeding should know or will soon find out. If a fish has a known deformity as a fry it's kind of a waste of time growing it out when you could be putting your effort and space into a better fish. As cruel as that sounds.

Oh I know... I have had multiple spawns and was just saying something. I'm definitely starting fresh with my mammon. When I talked about taking a chance with one... I was referring to one like this towards my project. These arent the best pics because he's stressed right now but he has red base towards the front of his body.

Culling is a must. Not many people have the want or need for 200+ fry. Also just through genetic variation there are going to be some stunners and some runts, why not keep the best and cull the rest. Wouldn't you want the best of the a batch if you were buying a fish? That's how all high grade FH were created. Culling doesn't have to be about deformaties. I am going to raise all 200+ of my RT fry until I get a good amount of faders then I shall be culling the rest unless I get some good looking non faders.
