Water change sunday anyone?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Did WC on 2 -- 125 gallon Frontosa Tank, 2 --- 75 gallon mixed African Cichlids and 40 gallon breeder tank that has juvenile Tropheus. Took 3 hours, but had a cold one between tanks.... :)

I do not do manual water changes on any of my big tanks (220g/ 300 g / 500g). They are all connected to the rain water collected from the roof and in rainy season they typically get a 50% fresh supply daily. Planning to hook up the pipe lines to my smaller grow out tanks too pretty soon so that the whole thing will be automated.

In dry season I do have to do this manually though. But then the water changes happen only once in two weeks.

I don't even drain my tank anymore. One hose to my basement drain, one hose from the utility sink into the sump. Capful of prime every 15-20 minutes added to the sump. Haven't touched a bucket in over a year.

I have 2 125s that are connected and I don't drain either. I have an overflow on the right tank that drains into my kitchen sink's drain and run new water into the left tank.

I don't drain any more either. It just over flows. But I've been wondering always, the total amount of fresh water that ends up in the tank at the end is lesser when we are using this method, isn't it (because part of the new water can overflow too)? The positive thing is that the fish will feel the change in water parameters gradually.

this is a very poor way to change water. dilute it, yes, but you aren't removing near as much fish waste/old water as you would if you drain and fill.

I have to agree with Gill Blue. If you have a hose running into the basement drain already, why not just let it empty the tank down to the desired level, then refill it after that........instead of doing both things simultaneously, where I would have to imagine that you're also ridding a good percentage of "new" water along with "old" water.

That's the same as my schedule lol. I do 50% on Sunday and 25% Wednesday. Or vice versa if parameters are up to par
