Breeding Bullheads

You know what? I am going to engage in this little experiment as well. I'm going to start with Ameiurus nebulosus marmoratus and if that's a success, branch out to include A. serracanthus and A. brunneus as well.

Bullheads are one of my favorite fish. They get big enough to be a handful,but not ginormous like some of the other popular predatory catfish. Mine always had their own distinct personality in each individual fish. Easy to feed too. We're gonna see if they're easy to spawn it looks like as well. Can't wait. Yellow Bullheads are my favorite by far still. It's also very nice that I'm surrounded by them where I live too!!!

I my pond [it is confined but I could not see them] I let several black bullhead go and now there is baby bullheads and big bullheads.

Here's my 2" (hopefully) breeding trio of indexed juveniles, with my great luck I'm sure they'll be different gender...

Anyone still planning on attempting to breed this year? Rob, Zach? I upgraded my trio of yellows to a 10g clear Rubbermaid bin as another growout but they're still only 2.5-3" so I don't think they'll be big enough to breed by this spring-summer. I might wild catch a few 4-6" ones around spawning season and try to spawn them in a 30 long but I'm not sure yet.

I thought i heard that they love mud or salt as substrate and that you can breed them in that but I believe that on a video on youtube called Native fish care:yellow bullhead by everything fish. Hope this helps.

Yes, they often inhabit muddy bottomed waters but I've seen them in the wild breed over sand and occasionally a sandy-gravel mix as well. Yes I've seen that video, I made it , my youtube channel is in my sig.

Might throw some black bullheads along with tubes and Sand in my pond this year and see how it goes.
