First....Congrats on planning to build one....By when do you plan to get it completed...I wil be glued to this thread like a hawk on its progress.....
My automatic choice would be Amphilophus varieties , Jaguars and RTM's....(sorry my choice only)....but you have a ton of options....wondering how different responses you will start getting on this one !!!!
Jags and RTM aren't Amphilophus? Maybe I'm misunderstanding.

Lol even the plywood walls should be reinforced, one sheet of plywood will be tough to hold the pressure of the water, maybe reinforced with double plywood would work

That's a good idea, I was also planning on using 2x4's to make a brace around it. Putting them on top would kind of ruin the pond aspect of it.

So right now I have a small jack dempsey and jaguar growing out in a 55. I figured I would let them get a few inches bigger just too avoid losing them. What other fish? RTM'S and trimac really do look nice, could I also do a few festae?

I use a @1000 gal kiddy pool to over winter water lilies, goldfish and koi in my basement, and put it outside in the spring thru fall. At slightly over $100 very economical, and with its ease of breakdown and setup, I find it very useful.
The large surface area also has great potential for gas exchange.
Here it is in the basement

and outside in the summer, this year with Coptodon (Tilapia) zillii

I also put a 500 gal in my sons bedroom when he went off to college, for cichlids too big for my tanks

I really wish I could buy a pool similar to that, but I'm really restricted to specific dimensions. It is a great idea though
