New filtration setup questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Look first off calm down whats done is done and i think its great that you and your dad are sharing the hobby together. I do that with my son (5yrs old)

But there are some basic things you need to have. First you absolutely need to get a liquid test kit (most of us use api master test kit)

Second you need to understand that nitrogen cycle. Google is, read it together. You both need to be on the same page.

You are really under filtered for that tank. You need to get those filters cycled but i wouldnt put my fish through the cycling process ammonia and nitrite can be really hard on the fish.

Before you use the safestart there are some things that you guys need to understand. Never wash your media or foam in tap water it will kill the bb. You wash it in tank water as its draining during water changes.

Their are two ways to cycle a tank fish in (fish are the ammonia source) usually hardy fish like giant danios are used. and fishless where you manually add the ammonia. Your doing a fish in method since you already have the fish. Also gooogle this good stuff to know.

A fish in cycle is a great learning experience but something that i would recommend against putting your current fish through. It can take months to cycle a tank and i doubt all of your current stock would survive.

I used safestart after doing some bobe headed things like using meds that kill beneficial bacteria. The stuff worked for me in less than a week.

With the safe start you have to wait 24 hrs after using a product like prime or any dechlorinator. So do a large wc, wait 24 hrs, then dose with the safestart (before dosing shake the bottle like crazy) after dosing you test the water daily.

If ammonia creeps up dont do wc dose with the safestart again.

Google safestart watch youtube vids come back wi thn questions.

Also i dont think your current set up with sufficient even when you do get it cycled. Tour going to have to add filtration. If your a ways off from buying the 2262 you could add a ac110 great filter and holds allot off bio media. Or you can look into sun sun or odessa filter from what xraycer xraycer says they work great and they are really cheap.

Sorry for the long post just trying to get you as much info as i can think of.

Also just a suggestion show your dad this thread and all of the other stuff your going to research so tou can both be on the same page

Filters are re-cycling. I have nitrites!

What ? Lol i didnt see that i wouldnt have typed that long @$$ post lmao

Did you test with a test kit ? Im confused man.

I do understand the nitrogen cycle, and my dad knows the basics of it, but there is a lot for him to learn. I do also have liquid test kits. I have every freshwater test except for high pH. After putting in a dose of API Stress Zyme in the aquarium, I read about 0.1 nitrite this morning, which means there is at least some bacteria in the tank.

Ok you seem to have things covered good luck. No mo tap water lol

I was doing a water change during the process of responding to your post. I took out about 3x more water than I wanted to... At least the ammonia will be down.

Sounds good. Just stay on top of your daily wc's and most if not all of your fish should make it.

I was happy to receive an email from the owner of the store where I bought the fish with ich. He said he would replace all of the fish that died. I left out the part about the re-cycling and just told him I'd wait another two or so weeks so the ich is completely gone. Looks like I may get about $100-200 to spend on fish in the next week.

Awesome! The only problem is that without the proper filtration your tank could easily crash again. I would definitely take him up on his offer in a couple of months when you have the proper filtration.

Hi there, I'm still rather new here but I have a little advice and that is to check Craigslist in your area for aquarium items. I have been looking around on there quite a bit for my project (setting up a 220 gallon fire eel and discus tank) and there are a ton of great deals that you can find for aquariums and aquarium filters.

I am not familiar with the filters you are using, nor am I that familiar with what kind of filtration is needed (besides what I have seen on the King of DIY channel) but I do know that if you need additional filtration and price is a limiting factor, then you can always keep what you have and just add to it. I do know that adding additional filtration works just as well as switching your smaller filters out for larger ones. I mention this because even if you end up running half a dozen smaller filters instead of one or two larger filters, you will be just as well off. Sure, there will be more to maintain, but you will have adequate filtration for your tank and stock until you can afford proper larger filters for your tank.

Another option would be to build a sump tank. Not sure if this is something you and your dad would be interested in doing but it will allow you to get optimal filtration and pack TONS of biomedia in it. This is what I plan on doing with my 220 gallon tank. I am going to look at and hopefully purchase a used 55 gallon tank (it was only used for two months) that I will install baffles into and make work for my filtration needs. The best part...it is going for $40.

Hope some of this helps and you get your tank back up and running. I am one of those people that gets attached to me fish and really hate to see them suffer or worse.

Btw, great taste with the fire eel! I currently have two of them that are about 4-5" long in my 29 gallon tank that are waiting for my 220 gallon tank to be setup. Once the 220 is setup they will have it all to themselves for a while, until I have some discus raised up to add to the tank.

Good luck and keep us updated!
