I have a 55 gallon tank in the works and can't decide of which type of catfish I want. The hoplo really stood out to me because it's a more active catfish but it gets a decent size of 8 inches or so. The porthole also caught my attention because they stay smaller but how active are they?

Stocking plans:
• 1 gold gourami
• 3 rose line sharks
• 1 pleco
• 1 rainbow shark
• 1-2 batia loachs
• farowella stick catfish? (I butchered that lol)

And maybe a few others such as crayfish, cherry barbs, shrimp, electric blue ram.

Get a porthole. It'll keep the bioload down.

Hoplos are great with a sand bottom tank, mine are constantly turning it over.

yea, you like a nice bio load in your porthole, don't you? lololololololol

I hate getting sand in my porthole, sand in the hoplo doesn't cause as much friction when you walk

I don't know about portholes but Hoplo's like the company of each other so you will need more then one( I'd say at least 3).

i would say a small group of porthole cats would be best for you given you have a few other fish, it gives you space to keep the smaller cats. Hoplo cats need a big tank IMO to take on their bioload and activity as a group
