it will be ok for a long time as growth slows down considerably after a certain size.
not to mention they're pretty flexible with their elongated body.
I assume you are planning for life as you do with most of your fish jaws, in which case you shouldn't consider an African aro, it will grow to large, ive read they can be nippy, and are hard to stay alive since they are filter feeders, they require to be fed multiple times a day, serious dedication. I say it's down to a black and a lei, though leis are said to reach 30" though I've only seen some come close. And though blacks reach 30" as well, they're more slender and likely flexible which would be better if you have decor. Blacks are less aggressive than silvers. I disagree with the ranking system of aggression stated prior to my post. Blacks are the least aggressive by far, they get picked on by other aros, and are commonly kept with discus which are sensitive. I'd be worried for the black if you got it, it will more than likely be picked on, where as a lei would defend itself or possibly take top spot. It's risky either way, you have to decide what you want to risk. Personally I'm no fan of leis, I'd chose the jar anyday over it, but I like darker fish. If I were in your shoes I'd chose a black, for the simple fact it won't pick on anyone since you value the other fish more, where as a lei, you're kind of flipping a coin and hoping for the best.

Aro aggression rankings are meant as a general guide. Each and every Aro has its own character. Even when you think you have the Aro's figured out, it can suddenly do a 360 so it's best to keep that in mind and have a contingency plan if all hell breaks loose.
Goong to have yo think this over. Black aro bring sold local for 350 looks about 8 to 10 inches.

Fair enough. Sounds like every fish. Every specimen has its own personality, but if you are to rank aggression it should be on what is average. Id be happy to agree with you if I read plenty more cases like the one you experienced. Just stating what I know however. In which case, jaws we helped narrow it down for you, do some of your own research like many of us did! Lol just messing with ya but it isn't a bad idea either

and also from what other local hobbyists and friends have told me but it is true it
depends on the individual fish. but imo i think the african is still the best choice, it's
not like its going to reach 30"+ over night or so. the one i had and grew out got up
to 25-26" / in around 7 years. they are indeed fragile when small but once theyre
about 8-9" it gets easier. all i did was leave a bunch of bloodworms in the tank so
it can eat when ever it wanted until the 8-9" mark. did 40% wc every other day to
keep water params in control while in the fragile stage.
