If you're serious install a drip system. the stability it provides is priceless plus media needs less maintenance. Some of the waste drains out and isn't processed by filtration, the rest is constantly diluted.
There are probably other organic/fish produced by-products that should be removed and not just nitrate. I test my parameters maybe once a year, or if fish seems 'just not right'I don't think I need to do so much on my tanks, I'm just terrified of nitrate creep

**You should see 3 stages JP direct nature spring tank/pond setup 24/7 constant flow and they don't even need any filtration.

Hendre I test my water 1 time per year and against the result with my tank water to see the different then I just stick with my WC schedule and thing should fall inline
My test kit usually expired before I use half each bottles.
