Ornate Bichir in 60g tank + tank mates?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That last statement is very true; I guess I just like dreaming big. The pond-like tank is not a bad idea; I'll see what I can do. Thanks for the advice! Also, what do you mean by "poly tank"? I've never used one or heard of one before. I looked it up and found many images of blue polyethylene tubs. Is that right?

Sorry for not being clear with poly (polypterus) tank i mean a tank that would better suit polys. 60 gal really isnt big enough for the larger growers ornates being 1 of them, now if you could eventually upgrade then you'd be fine

Oh ok, that makes sense. Thanks!

Would you consider doing upper jaws or is your heart set on ornates? I'm a big believer in getting the fish you want eventually instead of settling. Guessing ornates cause that's the thread title.

As long as you have an upgrade plan( J jaws7777 ) said, you should be fine for a few months. Ornates grow rather quickly. Around an inch or so per month. Or if an updrade plan isn't feasible or isn't 100% right now, would suggest playing it safe with some smaller upper jaws( senegals, polli, palmas, etc.) who don't grow as big or as quickly. Then getting some ornates at a later date!

I'm not an expert on bichirs, so I'll need a little help! The fish store I've been buying my new fish from had a few bichirs in stock, and they had awesome patterns, so I'm assuming they're ornate. Could you attatch some pics of the ones you're suggesting I buy? I'll attach a pic of the ones at the store as soon as possible. Also, will the bichirs you suggested be able to keep up with my current stock? I don't want them to be eaten!

You are getting help bud...dont add any fish to this tank. Remove most of them then research polys

What J jaws7777 and magpie magpie said. Polys won't make it in that tank with your current stock. sounds like you gotta rehome some of you are wanting to do polys. Also would caution about fish that get huge(anything over a foot) in a 60 gal.

Don't worry; I'm done with adding fish to my tank.
