Any Bonsai tree Keepers?

Buying premade seems unnecessary. The raw ingredients are cheap. Most guys use an organic component, something for water retention, and something for drainage, plus a little charcoal for chemical balancing. I figure $50 would yield enough materials to repot my entire collection in big pots.
I guess that would make sense as long as I can find the needed components.I did see some of them at HD.

When it comes to soil I use pretty much the same thing most the guys in my local bonsai club use which is a mix of pine bark soil conditioner, Napa floor dry (bag #8822) and then a bit of top soil. I use about 1/3 of each amount in my mix.

The pine bark soil conditioner is nice and loomy so drains quickly, the Napa floor dry #8822 is to help drain quickly (it works just like pumice but MUCH cheaper) Just be sure to get the Napa #8822 because it does not turn to mush like other brands will. And the the top soil is just to retain some water because I am gone on fishing trips so much my trees sometimes go 3-4 days between watering, but most guys forgo the top soil and just use 1/2 soil conditioner and 1/2 Napa floor dry.

Much cheaper than buying the premade 1 gal bags for $5. I use to but the premade stuff when I first started but now make all my own with the above mentioned stuff. I can usually make up about 40 gal or more out of about $10 worth of ingredients.

Well,I have a nice big sack of topsoil but I have never even heard of that Nappa floor dry.

This is the pine bark soil conditioner and what it actually is http://homeguides.sfgate.com/pine-bark-soil-conditioner-101383.html You can get that at most garden centers.

The Napa floor dry #8822 can be bought at any Napa auto parts if you have any around you. If you have ever heard of diatomaceous earth soil in bonsai, thats the same thing as the floor dry.

isde02 isde02 I'm probably going to go with something along these lines. I think gritty is the way to go. I wish Akadema wasn't so expensive on this east coast, because I'd like to go the Akadema/lava mix.

The Chipmunks have been getting me, in one of my desert rose pots I found a 3 inch tunnel bore under the plant all the way to the bottom. In a few other pots they buried seeds which have since sprouted and turned out to be sunflowers
