What is your favorite CA/SA cichlid and why?

I'm not much of a traveler but if i ever had the opportunity to do something like this. I would take it in a heartbeat.
Highly recommend this as well. Snorkeling with schools of Jack dempseys and swordtails is one of the best times I have ever had on vacation. Perhaps one of the best times in general.

I’ve had some beast males over the years.

Currently I maintain a pair in a 40b by themselves. The male looks like a yellow sided blue mini midas. All the personality in the world.
I think ppl miss out on the personality when they keep them in too small of a tank or because they are so commonly used as targets/dithers

The ones i had were in a 125 with an oscar and a texas cichlid. I think the texas cichlid got jealous of the group because he always seemed to mess up their breeding activity.

Yeah, i am trying to stick with something that isn't psychotic and also has personality which i am finding out isn't easy to come by. haha. It seems like the more personality they have the more murderous they are.

but (knock on wood) I have had pretty good luck when it comes to aggression in the past. I've only lost 1 maybe 2 fish to aggression in the 10 years I've been keeping.

Hows the pearsi in terms of personality J jaws7777 . I might look into those or bocourti, they are one of my favorites.

As far as personality pearsei are great DMD123 DMD123 would probably agree. Mine is literally a wet pet, dog with fins lol.

He hates me and loves my wife. Will never hand feed with me but does it no problem with her. Even today after i dropped him back into the 300 he was sulking and darting behind dw when ever i approached the tank. My wife walks over to check on him and he swimms right uo to her wagging his tail like nothings wrong.

One thing to consider is feedings. I find it easier to feed the polys with herbivorous cichlids. Other than krill the pearsei and het wont touch meaty foods. Easier to get the polys fed.

Id probably pass on oscars. Only becaus some of the upper jaws are slower growers, id be concerned with the oscar out growing them amd trying to snack on one

Yeah I completely agree and plus I want something a little less common then an Oscar. I think I have it pretty narrowed down at this point. I think I’m going to keep it a secret to save it for a big reveal. It’ll be more fun that way lol
