Kewpie's Dragon Worm Growth Thread

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I feel like we try to rationalize the hobby too much sometimes, it's not a hard science. There's consistently exceptions to the common consensus.

Yup. Too many times we say things like "can't do that" but without reason.

Enjoy that lap man. Post more pics of it.

I have been one to say no to lj and uj mixing only because of the huge size discrepancy that can occur especially early on. It's a fact larger fish eat smaller ones. It can happen with two really off sizes of ljs or ujs too. I'm not trying to villanize the endlis. It's like with what happens with pits, or dobbies, or rots when in fact smaller dogs account for more bites then larger every year. I've seen huge tanks with crazy size differences too. Once again it's like the dogs more so the owner then the animals that are to blame.
That said I had a bad endli or, really a bad sales person at a lfs when I was young. So that has kind of slanted my opinion a bit.
It looks good, just be cautious and keep them fed well.

Do you feel this way because of experience or does it just "look" not right (the size diff)

What did the bad endli do ?

Sure smaller fish get eaten but your completely exaggerating it in this situation man. 15 in lj and a 9 inch uj sound like a big difference, but it isn't. Im totally on board with cb sens and lj being a no no but other than that I'd like to see actual examples where keeping lj and up together doesn't work. Can predation happen ? Absolutely but it's not as common as it seems.

BTW I had a tiny seen and big 17/18 inch dabola endli together. That sen was the only fish the endli DIDNT attack. Still the size diff was just that wide of a gap to warrant them not being kept together as the sen was a skinny 5 or 6 inches.

I probably have had more aggressive uj than lj.

Sure someone may have had an endli eat it's tankmate but for some unknown reason juvie endli can be known to do this. Doesn't mean all endli or all lj will.

TBH I stopped keeping the two together because I like things symmetrica. I don't like the pearsei/het combo or the jag/vulture combo just like the up/lj combo not because they can't be kept with each other but because it does aesthetically please me.

I get the dog comparison but don't see how it applies. Are you saying the lj's will eat the uj's ? Or just and aggression thing ?

I can tell you from personal experience that any aggression from lj was never directed at a specific tankmate ie uj, but always spread out indiscriminately.

Infact only the ornate (upperjaw) routinely attacked smaller Polys.

I hope no offense is taken by this disagreement I always value your opinion and you absolutely are a great poly keepers it's just I see allot of new members being told uj and lj can't be kept together and it's simply not true.

Plus we're talking about a 10 inch lap. It will be yrs before it hits the 20 inch mark if ever

Yeah its more of a possible predation thing with me. I'm not saying to not do it I'm saying just be careful. There's a whole thread on just this subject with way more pages of poly on poly crime then I care to look at tbh.
Oh my little bundle of joy endli that I had. Well first off the guy selling it to this 14 yr old who didn't know what it was told me it wouldn't get much bigger then 8" and kinda skinny and a 75 would be great for it for life. So I asked him if it would be ok in with African cichlids he said yeah they come from africa. Let' just say 8 months later I had a 12" endli and not a single African left. It killed anything that was to big to eat.
I get it it was a one off. That was 30 years ago and a lot has changed in the hobby and in information available to us.
I'm not saying that all endli are like that I'm not saying all lj are like that and I'm not saying that no uj could be like that. But it's like stereotyping unfortunately alot of the time there is a grain of truth and it has happened more then once or we wouldn't have stereotypes. I hate to say it like that but look at that thread and see which poly is the perpetrator of the crime the most.....
Once again do as you please I'm not the poly police. I won't tell you you can't do that. Even if I did why would you listen? I will give my .02 cents though do with it as you will.

I appreciate both of your insights. Ultimately the conclusion I'm drawing will obviously be based on what I'm seeing with my own eyes in my tank. I see one of the most mild fish I've ever owned, eating in direct proximity with other fish that it could swallow up in a second if so inclined.

That being said I'm going to constantly monitor the situation and react accordingly but so far so good, they all get along really nicely, very happy with it. I'll try to get some better pics of the lap and others soon. Thanks J jaws7777 and twentyleagues twentyleagues
