Why are these being sold????

This is that good intentions thing. What I see is a wide variety of my favorites requiring a permit because of someone else's moral compass.

In the USA, are there currently any fish keeping restrictions, import or otherwise, that were put in place due to cruelty issues?

Currently is limited to what will affect the local eco.

However with the current state of things it wouldn't take much to really screw up what we have. There's people going to hurricane ravaged areas passing by people in need to rescue animals.

That's a whole other dumpster fire, but you see what I'm saying.

Little johnny wants an arapaima. Dad takes him to the lfs. To poor Johnny's dismay none are available. Now what happens in your opinion at this point ?

I agree, and the reality is that fish are way down the moral compass list compared to dogs, cats, and other furry friends.

All one has to do is take a look at the restrictions and regulations regarding dog/cat food, vs fish food. If a few hundred fish die, whatever, if a few hundred dogs/cats die, or even just a few, the internet explodes, and class action lawsuits start flying in all directions.

Yes, for sure, I get it. I just don't see it happening in my lifetime, but you're right, who knows? The main focus has always been on invasive/noxious species, I don't think the Govt can control that, let alone attempting to restrict or enforce species of fish being purchased based on someone's idea of what may be cruel, or not.

Could you imagine the chaos of say a pic of a bunch of bull mastiffs crammed in a little pin at petshop?

Fishing both industrial and recreational will have something to say about rules and laws coming about the welfare of fish, an argument that has already started.

The alternative, is the fish store does stock them. Now little Johnny goes home with a monster to die prematurely in his 55 gallon.
I think the shop that does not stock them has the best outcome for the pima and little Johnny .
The local fish store also keeps its good name in scenario no2 for not selling something no one can house.

Serious question. Are you really seeing these stocked in good quantity at local shops?

I cant recall one single time in 17yrs around the southeast from TX to GA. Only been around the panhandle in FL looking. I remember the days of seeing baby alligators and caiman...not one paima

Maybe you are right about a shop not stocking them lowering the chances of it being sold thats fair. But if the dad disregards the info and still requests the fish to be ordered then it changes nothing. Even if they inquire about how he plans to care for the fish, he could just lie.

Im not disagreeing with you that it sucks that such a large fish could be mistreated but theres 100's of other species to consider too.
