I hardly feed as is lol. Twice a day. Just one small pinch of bug bites. That’s it. He’s doesn’t even get all of them since some go to the gravel. I suppose he picks those up over time tho.
Right, my cichlids turn over sand and gravel, getting all the food. They make
dunes out of the substrate and do their own aqua scaping of anything mobile in the tank. Another acquaintance has BPs and some of them do the same. It is instinctive behavior that vary with individuals. Some are messy eaters. Mine are right on the food.

Instinctively in the wild, and some in capitivity will drag moveable rocks, sand, whatever is available and build burrows if one is not available.

I think it’s probably just the flash. (But between you and me let’s say it changes color, that sounds cooler)

I doubt I’ll be able to. I doubt my lfs would be able to get any info. Pretty much all I know is I got the best looking one from the batch. He was the only one with pearls and any noticeable bump on his head.

[/QUOTE. Nice pick. He is definitely a beauty. Looks like you got the pick of the litter. Because some FHs are bred in Thailand, thought it might be interesting to find out if he was bred in USA and how far back his hybridization happened. Some fish shops are forthcoming with information. He seems healthy, alert and growing fast. Hopefully he won't get cranky when he gets older. LOL. With all the love comin' from you and your Dad, he should be a good natured little beastie :).

I went back and took a closer look at your Fh's belly. In some pictures there is a noticeable stomach bulge. It could be indicative of constipation. Bug Bites fish food does list peas as one of their ingredients, and peas are a laxative/ stomach tonic. I don't what percentage of pea your fish is receiving in a pinch of food. Frozen pea--thawed, skin pealed, chopped into very small pieces. Sometimes people won't feed their fish for a day to get them to eat the pea, and to cleanse the fish's digestive system. Try instead Also add some > aquarium< salt. 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons= 1 cup minus 1 tablespoon dissolved in tank water or water change water for the amount of water in your sized tank. Note: as you probably know do not add salt directly to water, completely dissolve in water outside of tank before adding to aquarium. I will include some in your gift shipmnt.

You had also mentioned stringy poop. Thin threads could be a sign of worms or Hexamita. Treat with Metronidazole. There are broad spectrum antibiotics, stick with a known company. I would ascertain that that is actually the cause before treatment with antibiotics, as these could compromise or eliminate your beneficial bacteria cultures.

Since you are in college, you might take advantage of the facility and see if you have an ithyologist or ithyology extension department to consult with photos and possibly stool samples (fresh or frozen required?) for analysis to be sure. I have included here a PDF. While I know you have much other studying in school; I find any material relating to my fish highly interesting reading. PDF is: Hexamita In Ornamental Cichlids-eXtension. This article originates from The University of Florida.

He hasn’t had this stringy poop since. His belly has gone down a tad from the last photo I posted of him. I’ve reduced feeding, still twice a day, but only a few bits of bug bites. I would like to get him on something else. I’ll probably tell my dad not to feed him today and possibly tomorrow. Then start feeding again Monday.

The stomach bulge might just be constipation or overfeeding. Check for that first. We appreciate your Father's care of your fish. Are you sure he isn't being a little generous with the fish's portions? Delicate subject to bring up.

He showed how much he feeds. It’s 5-6 little pellets. Which I’m gonna have him reduce until his stomach is flatter

I just talked to him. I guess he was feeding a little more than what I thought. He said 7-8 pieces each feeding. I told him to hold off today and possibly tomorrow and see how he looks Sunday night. Then told him around 4 should be good per feeding.
