75g Looking to start African Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Have not chosen exact fish yet, but rare and colorful are good! Another member made suggestion above, that’s probably where I’ll start.

Background most likely that vinyl roll out stuff... not sure which setting...

I looked at the holey rock in Petco, seemed real... I ordered 4 large pieces. Comes in a few days, I did not know it doesn’t stay white.
Algae, staining, dirt so on and so forth will cause them to discolor. You can take them out and bleach them, scrub them and rinse them to get the white back. If you let the sit in fresh water for about an hour then let them sit in the air for another hour they are good to go. If you are worried about chlorine you can soak them in so dechlor too. I used to do that then realized it was unnecessary.

The artificial Holey Rock is very expensive in my area. I eventually located authentic Holey Rock at my local rock yard. Bought 200 + Lbs. for about 20 cents a pound.
My rocks have a coating of green & rust colored algae. I elect not to clean it off, I like the natural look and the Mbuna are constantly grazing on it.

1/4 came today... dang looks pretty not authentic....

Glanced at it in Petco here, seemed liked real rock... this is molded plastic...

Least I got the Carib sea sand for ph.... gonna seek out actual holey rock, seems it’s on ebay for $75ish per piece... same as I paid for 4 of these...

Go to a landscape supplier and get large river rocks from fist to head sized. Cheaper and better for the fish.

If you are looking for Vics, look into davesfish.com super reputable dealer, have ordered from him in the past and have always got quality fish. Also he can probably give you some advice for vics.

I think I’m liking the lake Victorians!

All comments have been super helpful!

Anyone bought from these folks?

gonna call local rock yards, however I’m not super optimistic...

Not that it matters but the 4 Petco lg holey rock things are identical ?....

What you got?

Currently two 350’s and a marine land canister (their biggest one) , and xl sponge filter.... That’s what’s on there now - could probably squeeze a 407 or 406 what ever the old version Fluval is if needed...

Got a fx 4 in a box, sadly stand doors don’t accommodate it ? -
