New tank & cycling parameters

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I do not want to rehome so guess I'll be figuring something out. That's not right to sell some poor sap (even though it was my neighbor) 5fish to give someone for a gift knowing this would happen. And no store where I'm from would ever take them back!

Building a pond or getting a big container might not be a bad idea. They need colder than tropical temperature. Something like intex portable pools might work for them much better.

In most Rivers and Lakes the Nitrate level will be 0 ppm but in the home aquarium keeping it maintained at 10 ppm or less is ideal but depends on the specie of fish . Some species of fish from parts of the Amazon for example would have health issues at a reading of 15 ppm.
What about goldfish & FH specifically? Now those are the only fish I'll be able to have, so I can be specific.
tlindsey, do you that stand could hold a 29 G glass tank, or would it even hold a 29 G acrylic? Thaks

The Goldfish or FH will be fine with weekly water changes. Tbh I only would sit nothing larger than a 20 long on the stand.

Cool (Tbh?) So weekly should keep nitrate around 0--15 ppm, is that it? I would need a 20G long tank, right? I can't put them outside in a pool. Summer in Alabama gets around 115--15° F heat index. Any fish would literally cook!I
Thanx love to all from the Fishy Five!
My goldfish posse!

There are lakes in Alabama that have koi in it, if koi is fine, comet would be fine as well. I would say get 100 gallon portable pool when they get over 6 inches.

Am going to retest water parameters later today. About the awesome goldfish, there's some great advice. WHEN they get over 6" ! And while they are all 1" or under, what size tank? I looked up the intex pool also; $50 for that is very cost effective.
As far as Alabama rivers having koi: it's possible, but highly unlikely. I've run around in the lakes here for over 50 years & have never seen any or heard of anyone else that did.
Global warming that's causing Alabama temps to increase says if there are koi, they'll soon be all dead. Now summers here see a heat index in the triple digits for months. Even some of the natural born fishes are affected by the heat. That's my environmental soapbox for the day!
I would have to search my soul for the answer of what's right. There are also other dangers such as wild & feral cats/dogs, coyotes/wolves, as well as stupid humans. For now, the Fishy Five will remain inside & well cared for.
Thanx everyone! (Off soapbox---for now . . .)

Sorry most of my posts are so weird! The auto fill on this site drives me nuts. I am not ranking my fish!
Said thinking about tankmate for goldfish. Any suggestions? Also looking for temp tank for stand I have: 20G long if possible.
And hope you're all WELL

There is park in Huntsville that's full of koi fish. Not natural rivers, man made lakes.
