New tank & cycling parameters

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
We don't know how much food the OP used to seed the tank, was it a pinch, a spoonful, or an entire can of fishfood.
If its a pinch, or a spoonful that shouldn't be a big deal, if its an entire can, then maybe a vac would be called for.
Its critical at this point, not to loss beneficial bacteria, and they must be fed. Regular vacuuming can start once nitrate has taken over for ammonia and nitrite
The problem with this is there has been a lot of knee jerk panic type reactions, without getting to understand the basics, which is the norm with noobs. Fish keeping is a lot to do with science, and unless that science is understood, it usually won't work.
It's not like collecting stamps, where one sets them in a book and its done, there is always continuous adjusting.
Rocksor gave good advice early on, but being new, the OP was fearful.
It's like when a noob first encounters ick, and "under" treats because 1 catfish might be effected, with a result being, all fish get ick and die, instead of one or two. Collateral damage in the aquarium hobby is often unavoidable.
It's probably a good idea the OP is starting with some goldfish, instead of an expensive FH. Fish deaths are often the best learning tools.

Yes, I should have asked and considered quantity before making a recommendation.

Thanks so much to everyone for help. duanes is right about the OMG noob reaction. Finally realized just what he said: it's science & an oncoming learning curve.
you must take advice, but also learn & just do it. All the waiting /surprising won't change how you logically handle it. Being scared you'll screw up is okay: learn & move on.
I jumped in with both feet! Did about 45% H2O change. Wanted to do a little more, but couldn't because of an old ankle break. That's what determined amount of change. Python was a challenge only because hasn't used but once. Did the Prime when putting water back & checking temp.
Also received active filters & put them in after water change. Ammonia still high, but ain't gonna quit.I
The goldfish (Fishy Five) are seemingly okay though their human is still learning. Yes--you're all right. Patience is the key & an open mind to what you need to learn. Like I said: I'll be smarter after this.
You guys here rock! Thanks : )))

As of yesterday with a couple of PWC & new live bioactive filters (2) ammonia level is down from 8ppm or higher to 4ppm! So accordingly, I'm using the Prime to bind the ammonia, & trying not to over feed the "Fishy Five". They look exceptional & I actually think have grown a bit.
Going to test for ph and nitrite today, as well as ammonia. If anyone has further recommendations please let me know. I'm trying to be patient & allow nitrogen cycle to play out. Am also getting the additional Python book & 36" gravel cleaner to make all future WC's easier.
and I'm thinking of doing a video to help other disabled Aquarists with the Python system & WC's in general. It's a bit harder, but not impossible by any means. It just takes a little preplanning.
Again, thanks to everyone & hope you & all your families are doing well.

Realize now that I'll need another tank for the 5 goldfish cuz I can't give ' am up! Want to give them a nice size tank, too. Could they have any tankmates such as pleco or catfish?I
I know the future flowerhorn is less hospitable. I want to get FH @ 2" size & wondered if at that size they could live with the comets for a month or two. Also thought about a banjo catfish to tank with FH for cleaning ( not to replace my tank maintenance!).
I have one of the petco Imagitarium Brooklyn 55gallon tank stand. Does anyone have one or know if I could put the other tank on the bottom of that stand. (Or who I should ask?)
Thanks so much & good will to all. : )))))

No Catfish especially a Pleco. Wouldn't add the FlowerHorn too aggressive and.will kill the Comets. I personally have a 20 gallon long under the 55 gallon Brooklyn stand.

okay. I know tlindsey! I am getting the idea that FH are the best, but also the "sociopath" of fish!
I do indeed understand about FH & aggression. Do I have even a chance to setup another large tank quick enough to save the "Fishy Five"? Or do I absolutely need the other tank setup when FH comes? (Still haven't ordered yet.)
If so, I may have the FH by like next year lol! (I also have to factor in that I have to have it shipped to me. Not as easy as it was a month ago.)
Still don't want to move too fast & now have living fishes. Oh, & thanks for advice on the stand. After being in a 55, I don't feel it fair to put those guys in a small tank. (How big would you say?)
If you think of anyone who can be in with FH let me know. Just want happy, healthy, living fish.
Thanks lots. : )))))

Most say minimum 75 gallon for a FH. This may answer your tankmate questionhttps://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/threads/flowerhorn-tankmates.727042/

Really depends on type of goldfish, for 5 fancy adults you need 100 gallon, may be 75 would do but you will need lots of water changes. If they are comet then it would be better to build a pond (they will need 40 gallon per fish).
