While on our way home from running errands this weekend I spotted a turtle flipped on its back on the side of the road.
My husband turned the truck around so I could move her to the ditch. A bit of a normal routine in the spring and summer months.
When I went to pick her up I saw the blood and cracks in her shell. She also had a leach?AED61F28-94F6-430D-8146-F7532672A0C5.jpegEEE9F4ED-6E50-4AEE-8F65-739FC7AEE7F1.jpeg5A3B0164-B447-4354-8DB6-E0536D1B637E.jpeg
We took her home to patch her up and observe her.
The bleeding was already stopped and gelled when I found her. After cleaning up with peroxide she looked really good. Very minor cracks that weren’t breaking off or pulling away. After 30mins or so she started walking around as well as can be.
You can see here she was climbing out of her resting spot.

It’s illegal to keep wildlife here, so she went back off to the wild. The kids were sad to see her go, but it’s not like we don’t have other turtles. Haha.

Oh, our temporary name for her was affectionately “Quarter pounder” ?

I do the same thing.
I’ve stopped on very busy roads to save turtles. Dangerous I know.
I hear from the wife every time.
Just did this last week with a Box turtle.
Which I just found out was illegal.
Here in NC you cannot possess (with a few exceptions) any native turtle without a collection permit, even if it’s to temporarily move it from a road.
Nice save BTW!
