If you had one billion dollars

I think people underestimate what 1 billion dollars gets you. You could have everything mentioned in this thread so far and still have $998000000 dollars left…Georgia aquarium cost about $300,000,000 to build. You could own 3 of them…

Not underestimating so much. I grabbed my pic from some article on a luxury submarine yacht estimated to cost $2.3 billion.

In all fairness, if you somehow got a 1 billion windfall you wouldn't have 1 billion to spend just on aquariums, well I wouldn't anyway.

Firstly you'd splash the cash on some amazing houses, holiday homes, private jets, maybe even buy a sun kissed island somewhere, and your garage would have all manner of "toys" in it.

That little list alone would put a big hole in even 1billion. But even then you'd still be able to afford to have some of the most amazing aquarium set ups on the planet. The downside being is that you'd rarely get to appreciate them because your lavish lifestyle would mean you'd hardly be at home anyway.

The only people who'd enjoy them are the small army of maintenance guys you'd have to employ who'd be forever working on the huge systems your windfall paid for.

I did not think the requirement was to spend all the money.
I was just posting what I would actually buy.
I also did not think the money could be used for other things than setting up tanks.

So, on that note, here is my response:
If I can spend it on anything fish and tank related, I would have a huge aquatic lab, with biologist young and old doing research.
I would be researching selective breeding, disease prevention.
Using money to combat invasive species in lakes and rivers.
I would have programs to educate people on aquariums and fish keeping and breeding.
I would fund TV and internet programs.
I would offer free education in fish keeping and offer a free set up upon graduation, or certification.
I would donate startup funds for entrepreneurs who wanted to start local fish stores and or fish breeding.
I would pay for large annual conventions for fish breeders and enthusiasts and pay expenses for those who want to attend and or have booths.
I would start a publication to promote the hobby for both the enthusiast and the entrepreneurs (and it would be very affordable, if not free.)
I would have and lead teams to go all over the world to small towns a villages and set up fish farms and teach the local inhabitants how to raise fish for food and subsidize them.
I would also try to invest some of the funds in fish oriented businesses to make a profit, so these ventures could continue indefinitely.
I would back and promote this forum financially so they could continue to be the best most awesome fish forum on the globe!
I am sure each of the above ventures would result in many more projects as new ideas come up.

Tough to imagine. I’d say something along the lines of 100 million gallons, 24”+ thick acrylic windows maybe 100ft x 50ft each panel.
Great whites suffer in aquariums due to not enough space, I wonder if 1 billion would cover enough space for it…

But yeah, I’d have to agree that it would only be a small fraction I’d spend on my tanks. Maybe a bit more for *ahem* “convincing” fish and game to let me keep snakeheads and Asian aros…
And the rest on a nice big house with a nice big property, and some more nice houses and nice properties for my family.

its actually pretty hard to think of a setup that would cost one billion dollars
enormous bio type paludariums with rare species come to mind
and i dont believe i have seen a giant paludarium before

here is a setup that could cost one billion dollars

amazon bio type paludarium
500 thousand gallon water section stocked with arapaima
massive filtration and aeration system

huge arboreal section with tropical trees
some bald uakaris
i would still love to see this kind of paludarium even if it only costed a few million
