Hi so I bought this fish a week ago assuming it was an RTG/HBRTG Arowana, the shopkeeper told me it was and after crosschecking with google image it looks similar enough. I was gonna pick it up this Saturday but after googling some more I started to doubt myself. Turns out juvenile RTG/HBRTG, Banjar red and green Arowana really looked alike. I really can't differentiate them, could anyone help me confirm which type of arowana is this?WhatsApp Image 2022-01-05 at 1.24.13 PM.jpeg

The red/pink lights in your photos make it hard to be 100% sure. Ask to see the certificate for the fish at the store. Ask to see a microchip reading of the fish and make sure the number matches the certificate. Assuming the fish comes from a legitimate farm and the numbers match up, the fish should be whatever it says on the certificate.

Yeah I agree, the red/pink light just makes it more difficult to tell. I'm currently living in Pekanbaru, Riau, Indonesia. RTG arowanas are local to the rivers here if I'm not mistaken, almost every local fish stores here carry RTG arowana. I asked a few stores about microchip and certificate and they said that its only for fishes planned for export outside of town. A fish with certificate and chip cost approximately 1/3 more. So yeah in your opinion from this picture how likely is it to be a genuine RTG? and is it a HBRTG? I literally cant tell the difference between RTG and HBRTG.

It’s not a green or banjar red arowana.
A RTG and HBRTG arowana is hard to distinguish, especially when young. The only difference between those two, is that the scale shine for a RTG only reaches 4th level shine, whereas the HBRTG may have another row of scales which shine, letting it have the 5th level scale shine. The thing is, there are some RTGs that also have 5th level scale shine. The only ever way to confirm it is through the arowana’s parents, checking it’s microchip or it’s certificate of authenticity. When you bought it, did the seller give you a certificate?

I’m guessing it’s a RTG arowana as mine looked similar to your pic when young.

Whatever it is it’s a beautiful fish!
yeah, I'm still new to arowanas, therefore I don't know what to look for in good arowana (scales, shine, fins etc). But the face on this fish to me is just special too me. Looks soo dignified even compared to the other arowanas i saw that day. I was so impressed that I bought it on the spot without really confirming/double checking its exact species haha.

Thanks for the info, so its an RTG glad to know the seller didn't lie. nope no certificate, as I mentioned in an above post where I'm situated (Pekanbaru, Riau, Indonesia) certificate is only for fish being exported. Well I can't take a look at the arowana's parents and even if I could I doubt I can tell the difference (i cant event differentiate the two from google image). So RTG and HBRTG color and how shiny the gold scales look are the same right? only diffrence being the extra row of shiny scales.

Yes most of the time RTG and HBRTG are the same. They look almost identical. The slight difference is the scale shine, and RTG tend to be more reddish while HBRTG tend to be more yellowish.
i have owned both RTG and HBRTG, the HBRTG is more golden whereas the RTG had darker red fins.

The first pic shown is my HBRTG, can see it’s more golden. The second pic was my RTG, less golden and less shine but darker coloured fins.
As I have read somewhere, HBRTG is more related and closer genetics to XB golden arowanas, hence more yellow.

Correction: HBRTG aren’t actually just related to crossback golden arowanas, I just found HBRTG arowanas are crossbreeds between golden crossback arowana and RTG arowana LOL
