Gender My Jack Dempsey

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
what was the growth rate like on your JD if you don’t mind me asking?
Mine was a really slow guy. I really didn’t care for it well in its first year, so it only got to about 3 inches at that point. I got it at 1/2 an inch, and to my knowledge it should have been 6-7.
Once I started l doing well it exploded in growth and is now about 7, a year and a half later (seeings they slow down a bit by 6 inches I’d say that’s pretty good.

Yeah makes sense, I’ve heard that they’re slow growers. I’ve had mine for about 1 month and a half and it’s gained maybe half an inch, probably a little more.

That sounds pretty typical. Half an inch per month with occasional spurts is normal for most medium sized CAs.

Oh wow that’s one tiny JD
Yup I know!!!
like just now a 1” the others were smaller and I have to feed my canister every other day so my cycle doesn’t crash.
My reasoning makes sense to me and where my tanks are there are light switches and a house with a family that sometimes walk through so I want him/her to grow up, used to those things!!!! So hopefully this will work out for me I generally keep my tank room dark and shut down just on occasion that overhead light comes on!! Plus it’s eating every I offer!!!!! Not yet picky !!!! And not afraid of me!!! Big plus!!!

Yea I thought the same she or he swims right past intake I was worried but it’s a strong swimmer plus I added new appropriate dens!
The middle piece and right side are the fishs fav spots!!!! Named It Snook!!! LOL ? me and naming my fish!!! LOL ?

Well that’s good news because this one is going to move one time to a 75 gallon with maybe 1-3 other fish like TBar or something. I don’t believe that I can fit a Oscar and JD LOL ?!!

Yeah, unfortunately an Oscar needs at least 125 gallons.
Mine “gets along” with a convict, blood parrot, and banded leporinus.
If you are up for it, you can get a group and grow out a pair of jds - but then breeding is a pain.
I’d definitely try out some dithers at this point - he won’t be able to hurt them.
Even this young you may see indication of male or female, but yeah definitely going to be easier by 3-4 inches. They do grow faster young.

Well that’s great news and I don’t think this one is really ready for dithering fish as BA tetras can be quite fiesty and then there’s a clown loach in there and he is getting along fine for now this last BA killed my 3” F Krib and I had a pair in one of my other tanks a community so I put it in my 10 gallon just keeping the cycle plus he survived a wound from the last JD that killed the other 7 I saved 1 !!!! Once the JD is bigger than I will be more comfortable with adding in some other fish!!!! And what you said about the gender thing funny last night I noticed that clearly round fins a F trait and then 1 really light blue dot under each eye!!! So yea I am actually hoping For female this time but I don’t care either way because I think I will always have a JD !!!!! I just love them!!!
