I just got this guy and he has dark markings on his face. Seller told me they show their normal marking when they’re stressed and it should disappear after they’re acclimated. Is this normal for stressed platinum gars or he sold me a 80% platinum gar. 😂

Looks like a juvenile platinum florida gar. They generally turn whiter and lose most of the markings as they grow bigger (some do keep some markings it can vary). I do have to point out this fish has a minor snout/head deformity (unfortunately sort of common for platinum florida gars, hard to find a "perfect" one.)

Thanks! Good to know. You know anyone who’s bred them before?

I don't know anyone personally but yes there are multiple people who breed them.

I've heard of a few plat floridas recently turning back to a standard kind of markings and colour as they age. I hope this isnt the case.

If I was buying a platinum I would want it to be totally white from the off

Here is an example of a platinum Florida gar that was “dirty” but turned out perfect.

And here is an example of a platinum alligator gar before and after.

But again like I said they generally do turn whiter and get more clean looking as they grow. It actually applies to other platinum fish as well not just gars but again it doesn’t always turn out that way. Genetics can be weird and complex. I’ve seen adult platinum fish revert to normal after many years as well.

Here is another example (non gar): platinum ornatipinnis before and after (yes same fish)
