08TRDOFFROAD's 45 Gallon Build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well I have some major updates!

I got my basic RO top off system set up before I left town for a week (but was too busy to post about it before I left).

Pretty simple, and I can't say enough good things about autotopoff.com!

I T'ed the supply line off my tubing coming out of the DI canister between my storage container.

Drilled a small hole in the corner of the wall (shh, don't tell my landlord) and ran it to the parts behind my tank.

I used a 1" tank bracket, and 7"x2" piece of stock plastic, which I bent to make the bracket (all ordered from autotopoff.com)to mount my float valve.

It works great! I was able to let it run a few days before I left to make sure it would operate smoothly.

I was gone for 8 days and the tank stayed full! Much better than having to top off the tank manually twice a day! I fed the fish heavily the week prior to bulk them up since I have no one to house sit while I am gone. All was well with my fish when I got home and the fish were happy as could be! The only issue I had was that my filter sock became so clogged that the pressure would build a large air bubble in the sock and when the bubble released, it would splash water out of the sump under the stand. (Next time I will remove the filter sock) I mopped up the water under the stand and the small amount on the floor and let a fan run and everything seems to be fine.

When I got home I found that one of the cerith snails that I purchased not more than two weeks before had already laid eggs.

My wife and I went cruising the LFS's on Monday...haven't had a chance to do that for a while because we have been so busy trying to get ready for our hunting trip. Well long story short, I found the fish I have been wanting!

I picked up a small (2") Yellow-eyed Kole Tang!

Glad someone did bump this...nice new tang.

Good to hear about the top offs...I want one...but have been hesitant bc my sump has no baffles and therefore my h2o level fluxes quite a bit...

Also cool about the snails..cant ever have too many little snails when you love big wrasses as much as me. :)

At the request of a few I thought I would put up some updated pictures of my tank. It has kind of been on cruise control the last little while. I did have an issue with some bubble algae, but I picked up an Emerald Crab and between him and my manual removal, it seems to have gotten on top of it. I am currently making arrangements with a local reefer to pick up a Rose Anemone for my True Perc's. I haven't really made any additions since the Kole because I have had some vehicle maintenance and registration I had to get paid for. Now that it has been taken care of, things will pick up again with the tank. I will likely be switching to LED's and I have asked for a Ecotech MP10wES for Christmas!

After my swamp water issues my birdsnest bleached out, but I think it is coming around!

My Hammer Coral, I started with four heads, I know how 5.5 (one hasn't completely split yet)!

My zoa's were choked out by hair algae and bubble algae, which I got aggressive with and removed. They seem to be recovering nicely.

I hate to be the tang police, but neither of those tangs belongs in a 45 gallon tank. Were you planning on upgrading soon?

Really??? Honestly....can you see the size of those tangs compared to a pair of small clownfish??? In a size to space ratio they are fine in my tank for the time being. A tang the size of a quarter or fifty cent piece does not need a six foot tank from the get go. Will they be fine in that tank forever? Of course not. I have a 90 g. waiting when/if needed before I am in a house, and then they will have a 210 g. (or larger) to spread their "wings" in.

No need to be defensive, I was just asking if you plan on upgrading. They are small, but size alone is not the reason tangs need such large tanks, as you know they are extremely active. As long as you intend to move them into larger systems as they grow then no problem, it just seems like a lot of hassle. I would rather just put them in the 210 next and not worry about an in between trip to a 90. Why keep setting up temporary tanks?

Like pureevil said, that 90 will still be outgrown. That kole tang will do okay but the blue will need a much larger tank eventually. I have no problems with tangs in small tanks as long as you intend to either upgrade or rehome them.
