100,000 gal. pond needs advice!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
its gonna take a hell of a lot of drift wood to lower the ph on that thing .

if you want really cheap mechanical filtration then build a large gravel bed filter . really cheap , work well with low flow rates so cheap pump .

just build a structure higher than the pond out of anything , line it with pond liner , set it up so water flows in through the bottom and flows up through the gravel and out into the pond , nice and cheap lol.

also you need to get some surface cover over the pond . i think your should have 75 % of the pond coverd in plants in a full sun pond . look for floaters .

but if you add oxygenators be sure you have enough aireation as they suck oxyen back out the water at night .

other than that looks great gl :headbang2:headbang2

That is awesome. I have no advice but that is aweseom!!!

pout is right you need more plants. you need submerged plants that will compete with the algae, help stabilize your bacteria system, and add oxygen to your water. anything that keeps its roots (and gets its nutrients) in the water is good. that won't be enough though you are going to have to move the water around.

your filtration is not going to be adequate. start here http://www.koicymru.co.uk/constructb3c.htm and read everything you can about vortex chambers.

the high PH is caused by the concrete.

For starters, some large containers that are filled to the rim with foam will clear the pond pretty well.
A high flow pump pumps water into the left side at the top, it then trickles through the foam, onto the bottom, and when filled with water, is taken out with another pump. on the top of the right hand side.
This will remove a lot of the brown water and help the plants recieve more light. Might need cleaning very often in the first few weeks. Pretty cheap mechanical filter.

You are suggesting he use a sump on this? lol

You could turn one of the islands into a bog setup with some local reed plants. Run a pump into a sieve that is filled with peat. Let sieve run into the bog and then into the water. The peat will soften the water and lower the PH. The bog will eat excess nutrients. You can also layer gravel so the run off gets one last filtering before flowing back into the pond.

You can also run a fountain in there to give some surface agitation.

i think u need a big homemade fluidized bed filter. for the bacteria. as far as mech filtration just chuck on 5 large pool filters. also i rekon add some more fihies like barramundi. you have to get a a barramundi. oyu would rboably be the first person to own a fully grow barra in the world as far as in captivity.
