125 & 135gal stands

actually 135 gallons of water is half a ton (1000lbs). + weight of tank say 1200 poundsd(if using glass tanks). btw ur cabs although they look great i would not want to be there when it breaks(it will imo). i think that adding some bracing now is a good idea and wont effect the looks.
 
I've seen heavily rocked 90s on stands made of little more than particle board. It's amazing to me how little is actually required to support all that weight. Those will be fine, I'm sure. And they look great, nice and simple but not at all cheap.

I'm curious to know what size and kind of wood you used for the trim along the top of the stand (that surrounds the bottom of the tank) and how you attached it. I am likely going to be making a dresser-top addition that will allow my dresser, at 72x18 exactly, to hold a 72x18 tank (which overlaps it a bit due to the trim), and I'll be using a trim border like that to conceal the edges of the plywood that'll sit atop the dresser. Just wondering what you used for it.

Its better to be safe than sorry. adding a few more pieces of wood wouldnt hurt. were all just lookin out for ya.

As a shopfitter with 20 yrs,if that ply isnt moisture resistant you gunna be in trouble!!!.Just my 2cents.Phil
 
Nice job rex. Those vertical studs will definitely hold the tanks, no problem there. Don't see why everyone is giving you trouble. Only problem might be it swinging side to side, but you don't go swimming in your tanks do you? Didn't think so. The weight alone of the tanks is enough to keep it still on those studs. Good job again!
 
Stands look great. Dont mead to revive an old thread but what stain did you use? The color came out great. The only thing I can see people being a bit iffy of is the apparent lack of 2x4 support in the front of the stand.

The color is red mahogany. The thing that people dont get is that i made it so that the sides act as a support from the bottom. The plywood is doing the same thing as the 2x4s you see. Its not like the other stands you see others build where they dont use the plywood as a greater support.

Thanks, and dont let the simple fool you because both stands are still standing strong from the time i started this tread. They were also tested in a 5. something eartquake and nothing happened.
