I spent about 500 rand on decor and plants and such for the small tank (already had tank) and 5500 rands total on my large tank that is fairly plain

for that money you could easily do an impressive scape if you so wished specifically for say shrimp etc, i often just collect things over time; i don't have the money to set-up tanks all at once :)

5500 is a lot, 500 is more than enough i meant for a smaller scape

Exchange is 17 rand a pound so the scape is about 30pounds. I would love shrimp if my dad could take me to get some since they are not sold at lfs

well...the tank above cost me £20 (25 us dollars), the rocks and wood were cheap stuff i came across at the lfs. Filter and light are cheap ebay buys, the only real cost is the soil, which even then you only need a small amount say 1.5 litres of in a tank this size...

the hobby is as expensive as you make it, there are always shortcuts and bargains out there if you are patient; plus bigger isn't always better :)
What do you mean bigger isn't always better? That's basically the MFK motto.

The one thing I like about nano is that I have the ability to make the tanks look nice without spending a lot of money.
Thats kinda true. dragon rock is expensive @ $8 a kg

This is a really inspirational thread.

This makes me want to set up a really nice nano "desk" tank.

I feel like that's a whole new world of aquaria to explore.
Its really nice and calming, just dont slam the desk drawers. I made my betta so scared he hid for 4 hours

Here's another 12x8x8 scape I'm working on, manzanita and some red rock; on black. Kinda volcanic theme, I'm going to put in some black bumblebee shrimp I think; though depends on their visibility. Next to existing 12x8x8 for comparison.

Currently battling diatoms on the left hand tank arrgh

Man, you get me thinking about getting one of those small Fluval and taking a stab at this aquascape...I like the looks. I failed with plants after a year in my "big" tank, but I think having a small one would be more manageable for plants...could throw in a few little fishes my kids like (that wouldn't survive with the Lei...LOL).

Is the tank on the right Starphire glass? Aside from being thicker it doesn't have the green tint the higher iron oxide glass has.
