wats wrong with gravel?

If its small enough gravel, the turtle could end up eating/swallowing/choking on it trying to get food off of the bottom. If the stones are all too large to be eaten, that is fine, but again, those will collect detritus a lot faster and be more difficult to clean.

With sand, the detritus collects on the surface, where a good current can help get it suspended in the water column, to be removed by the filter. Also, sand is less dangerous to the turtles if ingested. And they can dig in it.

well i got almost nothing done today.i had about an hour so i put a few more coats of drylok on..nothing exciting.im hoping to fill it up and test it tomorrow morning and bring it home, since its at my buddys barn. so ill get pix up tomorrow for those of you that care lol. and thanks jschall and others for your suggestions and tips! :)

yeah sand is very good, i have it in mine. she eats the sand but it comes out fine. Mine truly will eat anything that will fit in her mouth, any and everything is possible food to her.

thanks guys..do you guys think i should build a sump for this thing?

Couldn't hurt, although its not really necessary. Is this going to be sitting on the floor, or will it be sat up on a small stand? If its on the floor, the sump would have to be pretty short to allow water to drain into it...
