Hey Guys,
So I am picking up a 150 gallon tall 48''x24''x30'' , comes with stand, 2 emperor 400, and light. I plan on painting the back black using standard cheapo spray paint. I want to put a little layer of play sand on the bottom and then use river rocks that I can get at the local hw store for $5 per 10lbs. Maybe thrown in a couple of plants just for looks. I plan on stocking with Clown Knife, Ornate Bichir and a Florida Gar.
What do you guys think? Sound like a good set-up? It will kind of give the tank a bit of a natural look I hope.
Later I will be drilling for a sump, UV, and all that good stuff

Congrats! In 6 months it won't look so big and you'll be measuring to figure out how to fit another tank in there :-)

Thanks, BUT, NO NO NO NO NO...If I like being with my girl, which I happen to, there is NO WAY I can consider getting a bigger tank for a little bit, I may wait a year, that should be enough time for the fish to get to a good size, then I'll try the, Babe the tank isn't big enough for them anymore! That or .... I guess she has to go...lol

I assume the recently switched to black silicone,

it must have been special ordered that way. they have been using only black since the early 2000's.

if you check their website, it even states that all tanks are made with black silicone unless otherwise specified, which was obviously done. some people don't like black, so they get one made with the clear. its all good.

its a great tank with awesome dimensions! enjoy

Ok so here is my dilemma
I've got the tank all set up and running, its cycled but the filtration is just not enough for the tank, its only 2 Emperor 400's....now I can pick up an XP3 for $100 this weekend and be set for filtration. Or I can sell the 2 Emperors and run a sump, I'm looking at a DIY rubbermaid with those plastic office drawers as a wet/dry....my only issue is its going to cost a bit more than the Rena since I will have to buy everything including the return pump....but I think it might be worth it in the long run. With Christmas coming up I will have access to a bit more cash. I'm also designing my stand and canopy that I am building around the tank so there is going to be some cash flow going there as well.
Right now I'm just trying to decide if I should do a sump with Coast to Coast overflow (found out the tank is bottom tempered and I am pretty sure its not a miracles tank due to the clear silicone) or if I should just pick up the XP3....
Anyone have any pictures of the return into their tank from the sump, everyone has overflow pictures but I can't find any pictures of the return set-up...

FYI - My 150G Tall is filtered by an XP3 and XP4. I have the XP4 input tube extended to the very bottom of the tank and the XP3 input tube hooked to a skimmer.

Tank currently supports 22 large African Cichlids.

I have the XP4 sitting next to the tank. The most likely place for a leak to develop is at the top (O-ring seal, valve, and hose connectors). That would drain the tank half way. However, I agree that the tank could drain completely (almost) if somehow the bottom of the canister broke.

UPDATE

Skinned the steel frame stand, just using 1/2'' chipboard, I'm going to be painting it, obviously, to help protect from water, I've got the sump sitting inside the stand, all plumbing hooked up, overflow, pump, etc...I've got a 24'' T5 light I had laying around inside the stand just incase maybe I want to throw some moss balls in the sump as a small bit of refuge, I don't really want real plants in my tank incase the fish mess them up. When finished the stand and canopy are going to look like the Marineland deep dimensions stand and canopy

How do I determine what my maximum and minimum levels in my sump are? I looked on google and used the search here on MFK and I am sure someone has asked this before just I don't seem to be able to find it....any help is appreciated....Silicone didn't seal up the plumbing 100% so I found, I think and hope, all the leaks and put more silicone around those joints and I'm hoping tomorrow around noon to at least have water moving through the sump, if there are no leaks I'm planning on picking up scrubbies tomorrow from the dollar store
